The German manufacturer has a strong reputation among the audiophile community, and rightfully so – it makes some of the best over-ear headphones around, and the previous Momentum True Wireless version was pretty impressive.

At its core, the Momentum True Wireless 3 are very similar to their predecessors. They offer Sennheiser’s “high-end sound tuning” via a 7mm TrueResponse transducer, provide noise-canceling technology to reduce the impact of external sounds on the listening experience, and incorporate a host of other useful features.
Since the release of the Momentum True Wireless 2 in 2020, Sennheiser’s consumer division has been acquired by global hearing aid supplier Sonova. But it’s business as usual for the respected audio manufacturer, with Sonova agreeing to a long-term licensing deal to use the Sennheiser brand name going forward.

At its core, the Momentum True Wireless 3 are very similar to their predecessors. They offer Sennheiser’s “premium sound tuning” via a 7mm TrueResponse transducer, noise cancellation technology to reduce the impact of external sounds on the listening experience, and a host of other useful features.
However, Sennheiser has made some notable improvements to its already successful formula. The noise cancellation is adaptive, which means it adjusts based on the level of external sounds in the environment as it goes along, rather than always applying the same level of noise reduction.

In addition to the USB-C port, the charging case can now be charged via a Qi wireless charging pad, the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec offers high-resolution streaming, and the earbuds themselves have received a design revamp. There are also a couple of new features – Sound Zones and Sound Check – both of which require you to sign up for a free Sennheiser account.
That’s not to say the Momentum True Wireless 3 lack competition in the high-end market. The £180-£250 price range is extremely competitive and includes offerings from some of the biggest companies in the audio industry. The Sony WF-1000XM4 – our favourite true wireless earbuds – cost £219, while the flagship PI7 from British manufacturer Bowers & Wilkins used to cost £350 but can now be had for £229.

Sennheiser has completely revamped the design of its Momentum True Wireless earbuds, and overall the third generation is a much better deal. They don’t look as expensive as their predecessors, which is understandable given they cost so much less, but their ergonomics are superior.
Once in place, however, the Momentum True Wireless 3 stay in place and won’t shift or move during a workout. An IPX4 water-resistance rating means they’re suitable for use in the gym, and they performed very well during a run in the rain around Romford.
Battery life is the same as the second-generation model. The in-ears get up to seven hours of use, and the charging case provides three full charges for a total listening time of up to 28 hours. That’s a very respectable number, and with support for fast charging and wireless charging, you’re unlikely to be stuck with a dead battery for long.

The Momentum True Wireless 3 are compatible with Sennheiser’s redesigned Smart Control app, which is easy to navigate and provides quick access to customisation options. You can toggle Smart Pause (wearing detection) and auto-answer calls, choose whether you want the earbuds to power off after a period of inactivity, and adjust the touch controls.
Taking a page from rival Sony, Sennheiser has included a feature called Sound Zones, which applies certain audio settings to the earbuds as you move between registered locations. You can create up to 20 different zones with a radius of up to 1km, and set noise cancellation and EQ presets that apply when entering and leaving those zones.

We’ve always expected great sound quality from flagship Sennheiser headphones – the manufacturer’s high-end tuning rarely disappoints – and the Momentum True Wireless 3 continue to maintain that proud record.

Sanso’s funky song “Do What You Wanna Do” once again proves the Momentums’ ability to deliver a clear bass line in a clean, uncompromising manner, while also highlighting the amount of detail they’re able to provide. There are percussive elements that would be lost in the mix on less skilled headphones, and the silky-smooth vocals made me long for a holiday on a beach in the Balearics.
The Momentum True Wireless 3 also have a sharp sense of rhythm. On Nilüfer Yanya’s “The Dealer,” their sense of rhythm was impeccable, with instruments and vocals interweaving beautifully and maintaining coherence despite the frequent changes in tempo.

The Momentum True Wireless 3’s noise cancellation abilities are similar to its predecessor: pretty good, but not its strongest suit. That being said, it is an improvement. In a world where we’re paying more for less in almost every aspect of our lives these days, it’s great to see Sennheiser lowering the cost of entry for its flagship true wireless earphones. It’s a smart move by the company, and the more attractive price, combined with excellent sound quality, effective noise cancellation, and improved design, makes the Momentum True Wireless 3 an attractive option in a crowded market.
