It turns out there’s a little more to today’s review than the introduction lets on. In the previous generation, Acer offered a small notebook that looked similar to the Aspire V5-171, with a Sandy Bridge Pentium ULV processor, for just over $400, which struck me as a pretty incredible deal for a market that was forced to accept the overpriced Brazos laptop. The Brazos’ GPU may have been good on paper, but its CPU performance was severely limited. As it turns out, Acer has updated this line with the V5-171. The Aspire V5-171 strikes me as a solid machine that’s actually good value for money, and would be considered solid even if it were a larger laptop. Three models in this series are available for retail; the one we have on hand is the middle model, which, depending on your perspective, is probably the best value for money. Ours came with an Intel Core i5-3317U low-voltage processor based on Intel’s Ivy Bridge architecture, with a nominal clock speed of 1.7GHz and a single-core maximum of 2.6GHz. It also benefits from Intel’s HD 4000 IGP and QuickSync, which I’ll discuss later on just how useful it is.
With a sizeable 6GB of DDR3-1333 attached to the i5-3317U’s memory controller, split into one 2GB DIMM and one 4GB DIMM, handling storage duties is one of the first places where the cost really comes down: a 500GB, 5400-RPM mechanical hard drive. Acer opted for a 7mm model to reduce the Z-height, but it’s still a weak link. You could argue that the display is also poor, and you’d be right, but again, this is a budget laptop and on an 11.6-inch panel, the low resolution is acceptable.
