The latest version of Harman’s slim travel speaker improves on sound quality, battery life, and USB-C charging. Let’s start with the good news about Harman Kardon’s Esquire Mini 2 micro Bluetooth speaker: its design has been upgraded, as has its sound quality and Harman Kardon’s Esquire Mini 2 Bluetooth Speakers Battery life. So what’s the bad news? The speaker actually has limited bass, and it’s not much bigger or thicker than your current phone — perhaps fitting, since, like the original, this speaker also doubles as an externalHarman Kardon’s Esquire Mini 2 Bluetooth Speakers Battery charger and has a USB-out port. So while its performance is impressive, don’t expect this little guy to rock the house. The device does look good, and is available in three equally attractive colors (black, copper, and silver). It weighs 8.8 ounces, or 250 grams, 12 grams more than the original Esquire Mini, and is nearly the same size as an iPhone, but thicker, at just over an inch, or 26 millimeters. The metal frame and tiny raised buttons are also in line with what you’d expect from a phone’s design. A faux leather case (which looks like a larger glasses case) is included, as is a USB-C charging cable.
The back is made of faux leather, and the built-in kickstand is wider and better designed than the one on the original Esquire Mini. It props the speaker up at a 45-degree angle.
There are volume control buttons on the top of the speaker, as well as a pause-play button that also acts as an end button for taking calls. Double-clicking the button skips forward one track, and triple-clicking it skips back one track. Still, it outputs more bass than you’d expect from such a thin speaker. The audio quality is good if you’re playing background music while watching a video and using the speaker to augment the audio from a laptop, iPad, or other tablet. You may occasionally run into sync issues between audio and video when using Bluetooth speakers and headphones, but I was able to watch iTunes movies and YouTube videos without any problems. You can use a wired connection if you prefer—there’s an audio input, but no plug-in cable is included. It’s worth noting that for around the same price you can buy Harman’s ultra-thin HK Traveler, a 2017 model that I haven’t tried but likely offers similar sound quality. The Esquire Mini 2’s design is arguably better, though. While you’ll pay a premium for the ultra-thin chassis and funky looks, it’s easily one of the better travel speakers on the market.
