I asked myself that question when I unboxed the Gen5detect. I thought the answer was: well, a little. Until I started testing it.

Dyson has simplified the way you buy some of its older models (the V8, V11 and Omni-glide), ditching the Animal or Absolute editions (which came with varying numbers of attachments) in favour of simplified kits that only include the main vacuum wand and cleaning head, plus two must-have accessories: a crevice tool and a combination tool. Firstly, it’s important to note that the Gen5detect is meticulously packaged in 100% recyclable cardboard packaging. Even the straps and inserts that hold everything in place are regular cardboard. It’s always nice to see big brands minimise packaging waste.
Inside the box is the main body of the vacuum, with a removable battery pack containing 10 lithium-ion batteries. If you want to replace theDyson Gen5detect cordless vacuum cleaner batteries, you’ll need to buy a second battery for a whopping $129/£129. There are two issues with this cordless vacuum: the price and the weight. But otherwise it’s close to being a perfect vacuum.
We were blown away by it when we tested it. It’s incredibly powerful – 262AW of suction power, compared to 230AW on the V15 – and that was immediately apparent when we tested it.
It has all the features of the V15 Detect, including the green laser and piezoelectric sensor, plus some new clever design touches. One of the best features is the crevice tool built into the top of the wand for instant handheld cleaning. But you also get all the extra accessories you need, including a hair screw tool and an articulating low-profile adapter that lets the Gen5 lie flat to get under the couch.
But all this tech means it’s Dyson’s heaviest cordless vacuum yet, at 3.5kg/7.7lbs. And then there’s the hefty price tag.
