Battery life could have been longer, but the ability to charge with a portable battery solves that problem. Microsoft’s Surface Go provides a rough template for manufacturers around the world to come up with as the perfect competitor to Apple’s iPad. The ideal Goldilocks tablet; not too slow, not too big, and not too expensive.
One of those is Teclast, which has just announced the X4, a Windows 10 tablet with an optional detachable keyboard cover that should not be confused with the traditional laptop Jumper EZBook X4 it launched last year. The X4’s screen is probably its most striking feature. The screen is sharp, oleophobic (doesn’t leave greasy fingerprints), has excellent viewing angles, and high color fidelity.
The keyboard cover, while optional, is essential to the full experience. It attaches to the tablet magnetically, is sturdy, and the rubberized plastic finish (dark blue, with a faux brushed metal finish) isn’t as sloppy as some competitors.
There’s some flexibility, but not too much, and touch typing is certainly possible thanks to the good feedback. As expected, there’s no battery or extra ports, which is to be expected. The only downside is the small size of the touchpad; it’s about half the size of a regular touchpad. Note that the X4 supports PD via the Type-C connector, so you can charge it via that connector. With the usual caveats aside, you’re faced with a simple choice. Either spend $400 on a powerful device, or spend almost twice as much on a similar device from a more well-known laptop vendor. The Teclast X4 ticks all the boxes in terms of performance and quality; there’s no overly memory-hungry software, and the build quality is very good. Opting for an SSD instead of eMMC storage is a smart move, and while the Teclast X4 battery life could be better, the fact that it can be charged via the USB Type-C port alleviates this nagging issue. The biggest issue, however, is aftermarket, which unfortunately remains a pain point without a clear answer or solution.
