Instead of layering on Android, each Android phone maker creates its own “skin”. This means each brand’s software has a unique look and feel, allowing them to add features and design quirks that help differentiate.
As one of the most popular Android brands in the world, Samsung has great taste with its One UI software. Currently in version 4.1, we expect One UI 5 to roll out with Samsung’s Android 13 flavor. Google, the creator of Android, usually releases the latest version of Android in the second half of each year, with its Pixel phones first. But Samsung is never far behind, and you can bet the company has been working on One UI 5 for a while.
What features will One UI 5 have?
We’re still some way off from One UI 5 – One UI 4.1 only recently launched on Samsung phones. It brings incremental improvements over 4.0, especially when it comes to images, updates to Samsung’s photo and video editor and the Gallery app.
Version 4.0 is more fleshed out, bringing color palette options to Android 12 based on wallpapers, Samsung icon themes, and granular privacy controls that all phones running Android 12 get.
One UI 5.0 will be bringing Android 13 to Samsung phones, and Google is rumored to be bringing new features in the latest version that Samsung could choose to include in its phones. These include a common photo picker UI for sharing photos to the app, the option to use customer tiles for quick settings, and a new notification permission for those who prefer really deep control over pings.
One of the best visual updates would be if One UI 5 allowed all apps to be themed. In Android 12 and One UI 4, only Google and Samsung apps can take on the colors chosen as part of the Material You theme feature for that release. This means that third-party apps won’t change color, so developers are required to provide a single-color app icon in their latest app submission to ensure Android 13 can theme as many apps as possible.
If these are major new updates, One UI 5 will be more of an incremental update than One UI 4 and Android 12, as Android 12 is a major change to the look and feel of Android and brings a ton of new features.
One UI 5 may also see Samsung make some visual tweaks to the interface to modernize it and give it a fresh feel. 9to5Google noticed a slight change in the appearance of One UI 5 at the source, noting a change in dialog boxes and some tweaks to the shape of notifications.
