One major difference between the AirPods 4 and Apple’s previous “regular” AirPods models is the shape of the Apple AirPods 4 earphone shell. The company says it analyzed thousands of ear shapes and more than 50 million data points generated by 3D modeling to optimize the curves of this new earphone. Specifically, Apple adjusted the edge of the lower ear cone and reduced the overall width to provide a more secure and comfortable fit for more people. The company also installed an H2 chip in the earphone stem, making the design more compact and improving airflow and acoustics.
Apple says both AirPods 4 batteries last five hours. If ANC is enabled on the pricier model, playback time drops by one hour. Both AirPods 4 can be charged five times in the charging case, for a total of 30 hours of usable time. Apple explains that all of its nominal AirPods 4 battery data is measured at 50% volume with Spatial Audio turned off. For the ANC version, the company says the estimates also include disabling conversation awareness.
AirPods 4 Features
The AirPods Pro’s H2 chip unlocks several noteworthy advanced features for the AirPods 4. Of course, some of these features are only available on the ANC model, but there are a lot of useful features on the $129 option. On this new entry-level set, you get personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking – an immersive listening experience tailored to your hearing. Sound features also include 48kHz, “cinema-quality” audio for FaceTime, and adaptive EQ. For calls, Apple’s new Voice Isolation feature will provide some extra help when you’re taking calls in less-than-ideal environments.
AirPods 4 have a force sensor on the stem. On both models, you can use it to control music, answer calls, and summon Siri. Of course, both models offer hands-free access to Apple’s assistant. In ANC mode, you can long-press the stem to cycle through noise control modes (ANC and Transparency).
Call Quality
AirPods are a popular choice for hands-free calls, so Apple has improved how they sound during voice and video calls. Voice Isolation, an H2-powered tool that Apple says “isolates and enhances your voice,” is a new feature for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2. For most iOS users, 50% volume is not loud enough, so I tested it at around 70%. On a Mac, however, around 50% is enough. Using both settings on the device, and mixing ANC and transparency mode when playing spatial audio and regular content, I had no problem using the noise-canceling AirPods 4 for four hours.
