Cheaper models only come with Alcantara If there was one thing worth noting about the Surface Laptop 4 launch, it was Microsoft’s announcement that it would offer both AMD and Intel CPUs for all models. Of course, this isn’t an exciting upgrade, as Microsoft didn’t offer any of that this time around.

The Surface Laptop 4 has four CPUs to choose from, two of which are AMD chips, depending on whether you buy the 13.5-inch or 15-inch model. The 13.5-inch laptop comes with a six-core AMD Ryzen 5 4680U, Intel Core i5-1135G7, or Intel Core i7-1185G7, while the 15-inch model comes with an eight-core AMD Ryzen 7 4980U or Intel Core i7-1185G7. As for the Surface Laptop 4 laptop’s battery life, it falls somewhere between the CPU and graphics performance. That is, it’s decent but not class-leading, lasting 9 hours and 3 minutes on our battery rundown test. That’s well behind the MacBook Air’s excellent 14 hours and 40 minutes, the 15.6-inch Samsung Galaxy Book Pro’s 16 hours and 28 minutes, and the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7’s 15 hours and 40 minutes.
You might expect this spec to perform slightly better than the 8GB model sold in UK stores; however, even with that in mind, the Ryzen-based 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4 still performs impressively.
Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Conclusion
Like its predecessor, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a very good ultraportable laptop. It’s thin and light, looks great, and has an excellent keyboard, trackpad, and display. I’d happily own this laptop and use it as my daily work machine.
The key question, however, is does it do enough to outperform the best in the industry? My answer is: not really. Its appeal is diminished by poor GPU performance and mediocre M1 MacBook Air battery life, and even a full switch to AMD and Intel CPUs doesn’t put it on par with the M1 MacBook Air.
