Apple took the wraps off watchOS 9 alongside iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and more at WWDC 2022 in early June, giving ardent Apple Watch fans a good idea of what to expect from this year’s big software update. With a more advanced workout app, true sleep tracking, and many other tweaks that come with watchOS 9, it’s going to be a big update for the Apple Watch.
Additionally, with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 8 at Apple’s September event, we now know exactly when watchOS 9 will be released.
We’ve outlined everything you need to know about watchOS 9, including when it will be released, which Apple Watch models will support it, and key new features.
When will watchOS 9 be released?
watchOS 9 debuted at WWDC 2022 in June, but like previous updates, it will take several months to roll out to consumers.
After months of beta testing, Apple confirmed at its September iPhone and Apple Watch event that watchOS 9 will be available to Apple Watch users on September 12, 2022.
What’s new in watchOS 9?
watchOS 9 may not be as feature-rich as iOS 16 or iPadOS 16, but it offers some small but important changes that should enhance the overall Apple Watch experience when it releases later this month.
Upgraded Workout Features
The Workout app will receive a number of watchOS 9 updates to help it better compete with fitness-focused smartwatches.
New features include the ability to tailor your workouts by tailoring your work and recovery intervals, as well as new heart rate zones that are automatically generated based on your past performance and fitness data.
Runners will love the new Dynamic Pace option to help you reach your goals, and you can race yourself if you run the same route every day. New metrics including stride length, touchdown time and vertical vibration have also been added to better understand your running ability. The ability to scroll through data with the Digital Crown also makes it easier to keep an eye on new fitness metrics in real time.
In addition to updates to existing modes, watchOS 9 introduces support for triathlon, allowing you to switch between swimming, running and cycling without any additional input.
True sleep tracking
Apple’s attempt at sleep tracking in watchOS 8 is pathetic, it just tracks your time in bed without really understanding the different sleep stages or other collected data. Thankfully, watchOS 9 is coming to true sleep tracking soon. The long-awaited update finally brings REM, core, and deep sleep tracking to sleep tracking, graphically displayed like most competitors.
The app works well with Apple Health to not only track your sleep time, but also provide insight into your sleep health.
Drug tracking
Taking your medicine every day can be difficult, especially if you have to take it at a certain time of day. That’s why Apple is adding medication tracking to the Apple Health app. As you might assume, the new medication tracking feature will keep track of your various medications, reminding you when it’s time to take them, and making it easy to record when you’re taking them via the watch.
New watch face
watchOS 9 comes with several new watch faces, including new Metropolitan, Playtime, and Astronomy watch faces. There is also a moon face display that uses moon phase timing and supports Chinese, Hebrew and Islamic lunar calendars.
Existing watch faces have also been updated to support rich complications, the portrait watch face will see improvements, allowing you to display snapshots of your pets, and an edit mode will allow you to add a tint to the background layer of a portrait as well. You can also customize the Modular Compact, Modular and X-Large faces with a range of new colors and gradients.
Notification banner
Notifications settings will change in watchOS 9, with new banner-style notifications appearing on the screen when you’re using your watch so as not to interrupt whatever you’re doing—though more intrusive full-screen notifications will still appear when you’re not actively Use a watch.
What’s New in Family Settings
watchOS 9 will also introduce new features to the Apple Watch Family Settings feature, giving kids new features they can use without connecting to an iPhone, including access to HomePod speakers and other smart home accessories, as well as the ability to access home and hotels through the Wallet app. room key.
