The AGM X3 is a rugged, waterproof, high-end Android device. It can easily withstand shocks and performs better than any other rugged phone. Its main drawback is the price, which makes it a popular choice for the brand’s flagship phone.
Performance and
The X3’s benchmark results were surprisingly good
Given that the X3 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 octa-core chipset, the fastest chipset currently in production phones, the device is fast. I tested the version with 8GB of RAM and didn’t notice any slowdowns.
We found a mysterious object in the box that looks a bit like a protective case – it seems redundant for a rugged smartphone. It turns out that this is a floating box (which we will test later) and is an optional accessory provided by AGM. This phone is “fully armored”, which means that it meets the IP68 rating and is another phone with MIL-STD-810G military certification.
The phone feels nice in the hand, but aesthetics are more subjective. I found the silver metal back and black sides to be clean, understated, and stylish. If it weren’t for the hardened rubber on the corners, I might have forgotten this was a rugged smartphone at all.
In short, it should be waterproof up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes and work in temperatures between -30 and 60 degrees Celsius (22-140 degrees Fahrenheit). It should be able to withstand a fair amount of damage without suffering a loss of functionality.
How it feels in the hand
With the specs out of the way, let’s talk about what really matters – how it feels in the hand. In use, the X3 feels like a high-end phone. The FHD+ screen is bright and has no notch. The bezels are minimal for a rugged phone, and the grip feels good.
The phone supports face unlock, which worked well in our testing, and if you often wear gloves, it also has a glove mode that works in a range of thicknesses. This phone joins the ranks of many that don’t have a headphone jack — something I’m still totally unacceptable about — but for a rugged phone, that’s forgivable. Fewer ports means fewer points of failure, and the provided USB to 3.5mm adapter works fine.
Games like Need for Speed and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds ran without issue at max settings. The multi-core score on Geekbench is 8,670 – on par with the Galaxy Note 9, OnePlus 6T and higher than the Google Pixel 3.
In terms of battery management, I used the standard settings that come with the X3. With normal use, the battery lasted me through the day and most of the night, although I tended to watch videos before bed. On the GeekbenchAGM X3 Smartphone Battery test, the x3 scored 5,182.
For a high-performance rugged smartphone with a large display, it’s impressive, especially at just 10.5mm thick.
Camera
AGM X3 Dual Rear Cameras and Fingerprint Sensor
The AI dual rear cameras are great for taking fixed-focus photos, and I found them to take decent photos in a variety of lighting conditions. The all-important bokeh mode works well, takes good photos, and is very adaptable to the distance of the subject.
There’s nothing special about the X3’s camera, but it takes decent photos.
The front-facing selfie camera takes good photos, with or without the “beautification” feature, but that’s about it.
This phone won’t compete with flagship camera phones. It can’t even compete with other phones in this price range, like the OnePlus 6T.
That being said, it doesn’t have to be. Taking good photos in places you wouldn’t normally dare take your phone might be more suited to this phone’s target audience.
