Apple’s recent iOS 16 update added a number of features to the iPhone, including a verification step for AirPods. If you’re connecting to official AirPods — like the new AirPod Pro 2 earbuds released last week, or the sleek, neutral-hued AirPods created in partnership with Kim Kardashian or other compatible Bluetooth headphone devices — you probably won’t notice the difference .

On the other hand, if you try to connect earbuds that are pretending to be AirPods, you may get a “Cannot verify AirPods” message, indicating that the earbuds may be knockoffs of the official AirPods. A prominent “do not connect” button will appear below the alert, but you should still be able to connect via the Bluetooth settings.

However, Apple does warn that unauthenticated devices may not function as expected. It’s unclear what performance issues users may experience when connecting to unofficial AirPods.

In addition to AirPod verification, new features for Apple’s latest iPhone, iPad, and other operating systems include the ability to edit and “unsend” messages, a customizable lock screen, and an upgrade to Focus Mode, among others.

If you haven’t downloaded the update yet, allow an hour or so, but keep in mind that not all devices are compatible with iOS16. Please check if your iPhone is compatible with iOS16.
