Samsung’s mid-range phones face stiff competition from Google and OnePlus
The Samsung Galaxy A35 appears to continue the golden age of mid-range devices from the smartphone giant. In recent years, Samsung has managed to pack some pretty impressive features into its A-series phones while keeping prices below flagship devices like the Galaxy S24.

25W charging speed Wired I tested the navy blue Galaxy A35, which was a bit disappointing, not only because of the fingerprint issue, but also because my colleague John Velasco, who got to try the phone himself, liked the way the lavender version shimmered in the light. Yellow and ice blue appear to be available in other regions. In our Samsung Galaxy A35 battery test, the Galaxy A35 averaged 11 hours and 9 minutes of battery life. We set the phone’s display to 150 nits and then let it surf the web over a cellular network until the battery died.

That’s about an hour faster than the average smartphone, though I would have expected the A35’s 5,000 mAh battery to run even faster. We achieved this time with the Galaxy A35’s display at default settings, with the adaptive refresh rate turned on. Locking the refresh rate at 60Hz actually lowered the average result by 11 minutes — which is odd, since faster refresh rates tend to hurt the Samsung Galaxy A35’s battery life. The good news is that you can keep the high refresh rate turned on without worrying about the Galaxy A35’s battery life being adversely affected. In our battery test, the Galaxy A35 lasted in line with the Pixel 8a’s 11 hours and 22 minutes. Neither phone can match the OnePlus 12R, which lasted more than 18 hours, though it benefits from the power management features of the Snapdragon 8 series chips.

Galaxy A35’s batterylasts well. After four hours of using the phone for taking photos, I still had enough juice, but more intensive gaming use resulted in a 10% drop in battery after 30 minutes.
When charging the phone, you can count on 25W charging speeds, which matches the speeds offered by the Galaxy S24 flagship. This allowed the A35 to drain to 53% after 30 minutes of charging, which is about what you’d expect. You won’t find wireless charging here like you do with the Pixel 8a. The Galaxy A35 is a good choice if you want a budget phone that won’t let you down in key areas like power, performance, and looks. The only problem, though, is that there are better options out there. The Pixel 8a takes better photos and offers more AI features.
It lasts longer on a charge and has more processing power. (You can imagine its successor will do the same.) If these features are particularly important to you, then paying an extra $100 for the higher cost of these phones is justified.

In the increasingly complex world of high-end phones, though, the Galaxy A35 does a good job. It has a large, bright screen, more AI features than you’d typically find on a sub-$400 phone, and a very good camera. If money is an issue (and it is for many of us), the Galaxy A35 offers an affordable option with few major sacrifices.
