HTC U23 Pro Review: An average smartphone, but with two major drawbacks HTC is back. This mid-range smartphone, the U23 Pro, comes with a microSD card and a 3.5mm port, and it fills me with nostalgia. But just because it was better back then doesn’t mean it’s still better now.

I’m not too happy with the front. The 5.7-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels and a frequency of 120 Hz is technologically advanced, but it’s not particularly aesthetically pleasing. It’s all due to the bezels. It’s wider at the top and bottom than on the sides. This hinders my pursuit of symmetry. Not only that, but the information line showing the time and HTC U23 Pro Battery status is too close to the rounded corner at the top of the display.

Camera: Rich details, washed-out colors

HTC has equipped the U23 Pro with a total of five cameras. On the back, there is a 108-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera. The fourth lens on the back provides depth of field shooting information. The front camera has a resolution of 32 megapixels.

Life is poor

The HTC U23 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor, which is in the mid-range market. The 12 GB of RAM is more than I expected for a smartphone in this price range. As a result, the U23 Pro runs smoothly and is fast enough for daily use.

For this test, I used Geekbench 6 to run the numbers. I chose three other mid-range models to compare the device to: Honor 90, Motorola Edge 40 Neo, and Samsung Galaxy A34. The HTC U23 Pro compares favorably with other mid-range smartphones. In some tests, it was far behind the Galaxy A34 and Edge 40 Neo. However, this positive impression loses some of its luster when comparing the device to the Honor 90, which uses the same processor. The U23 Pro always lags behind by a few percentage points.

The capacity is 4600 mAh. It consumes a maximum of 30 watts through the USB-C port and 15 watts over wireless. These are convenient averages. However, the power consumption is higher than comparable smartphones. With a little moderation, I was able to get through a day with the HTC U23 Pro.

PCMark Work 3.0 testing found that the

time was just 5 hours and 31 minutes. In comparison, theMotorola Edge 40 Neo battery

lasted 7 hours and 10 minutes. Even the Pixel 8 Pro, which has a brighter screen, lasted 6 hours and 21 minutes at full brightness.

Less updated software

Out of the box, the HTC U23 Pro ships with Android 13. The manufacturer is only willing to provide two years of security updates for this smartphone and has not yet commented on newer Android versions. Given that most manufacturers now have improved update policies, this puts HTC at the bottom of the pack
