We have issued an urgent warning to Christmas shoppers buying gifts for young children over the festive period. Australia’s Product Safety Authority (PSA) is urging shoppers to check that toys do not contain buttontoy batteries before giving them to children. Button batteries can pose a choking risk and cause catastrophic injury if swallowed or inserted into an opening such as the nose or ear.

The PSA said: “If you are rushing to buy last-minute Christmas gifts, take a moment to check that gifts for young children are age-appropriate and do not pose a choking hazard.””Be sure to read all warning labels and follow all safety instructions.” Toy batteries can be found in many children’s toys that produce light and sound effects, including stuffed animals, toy cars, light-up yo-yos, games, novelties and more like singing Like Santa Claus.
Last June, stricter safety standards were implemented for the sale of potentially deadly electric toy batteries, with companies facing fines of up to $10 million for not complying.Under the new standards, products must have secure toy battery compartments to prevent children from coming into contact with the batteries.
They must come in child-resistant packaging and have additional warnings and emergency advice on the battery and instructions.
Suppliers must also ensure that products are tested for compliance.Ahead of Christmas, PSA is asking shoppers to check its website to see if any of the products they purchased have been recalled.
