Apple’s WWDC 2022 keynote livestream is over, and we got our first look at all the upgrades to our iPhone, iPad, and MacBook devices. This includes a first look at watchOS 9 and all the available features of the new operating system for the Apple Watch smartwatch.
The new Apple Watch operating system also has some great new features. That includes making it a better fitness partner with training options like a triathlon-focused mode that lets you automatically switch between swimming, cycling, and running.
In addition to fitness, there will soon be new health options, including medication tracking. You can build a drug list manually or use your iPhone camera to scan the label and automatically add the drug to an existing list.
Apple can even look at drug interactions that could be causing you trouble. Health apps can warn you of substances that may interact adversely with your medicines.
But which devices will support watchOS 9 at launch and gain access to these and other features?
Which devices support watchOS 9?
Apple says watchOS 9 will be available “this fall” (September-November). This free update will be available on Apple Watch 4 and later. More specifically, this includes the following smartwatches:
apple watch 4
apple watch 5
apple watch 6
apple watch 7
Apple Watch SE
You’ll also need to pair it with an iOS 16-compatible iPhone. This means you will need:
iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
iPhone X
iPhone XR
iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max
iPhone SE (2020) and iPhone SE (2022)
What about people with Apple Watch 3 and above?
If you don’t use an Apple Watch 4 or later, you’ll miss out on all the upgrades that come with watchOS 9, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to replace it right away.
While it won’t offer the same fitness and health support, your old Apple Watch 3 will continue to function as normal. Over time, you may find some compatibility issues with watchOS 9 and iOS 16 being more tightly integrated, but generally, your device will continue to do its thing.
However, you may want to consider any security issues that come with using an older device. Hardware and software that have been available for a longer period of time are more likely to be cracked by hackers because they will have more experience finding vulnerabilities.
