iOS 16 is the next version of Apple’s mobile operating system that includes several improvements to the Maps app launching on the iPhone later this year. With the new operating system, Maps users can see new features like multi-stop directions and more transit information.
Multi-stop routing lets you plan ahead for up to 15 stops, and Maps stores previous routes in the app’s Recents section for easy access. You can also plan multi-stop routes on your Mac and send them to your iPhone before you go. If you’re already on the road, Siri integration makes it easy to add stops to your route.
If you use public transportation, iOS 16 is designed to provide more information, such as fares. You can also add transit cards to your Apple Wallet and reload your transit card balance without leaving the Maps app.
Apple will also roll out its redesigned Maps feature to 11 additional countries later this year, which the company debuted in 2021, including France, Switzerland and New Zealand. Updates include functionality for cyclists and street-level 360-degree views.
The redesign also adds 3D city capabilities, providing more detail for roads, landmarks and other locations. During Monday’s keynote, Apple showed a 3D map of Las Vegas and said it plans to do the same in six other cities, including Miami, Chicago and Sydney.
The urban experience of the Maps app encourages developer integration. For example, it will make Bird scooters and bikes easier to find. Additionally, Apple is adding high-resolution imagery to apps like Zillow for a more immersive view as you navigate your home.
