The Alienware m18 proves that, in 2023, 18 is the new 17.3. Virtually all of the major gaming laptop makers – including Acer, Asus, and Razer as well as Alienware – are replacing their high-end, 17.3-inch, 16 :9-display machines with models featuring 18-inch, 16:10 displays. As ideas go, it’s a good one, and, with the exception of the Alienware m18 R1 (2023) on which I’m writing this, the new generation of 18-inch laptops aren’t actually any bigger or heavier than their 17.3-inch predecessors, but the extra screen real estate is well worth having for gaming, entertainment and productivity.
The latest generation of CPUs and GPUs from Intel, Nvidia and AMD also means that these new 18-inch super laptops are now true desktop replacements. The phrase “desktop replacement” has been thrown around for a while, but now it can finally be used without exception, warning or excuse, as this new breed delivers performance levels that would have exceeded our wildest imaginations even 24 months ago.
