Keeping your Mac up to date is one of the best ways to keep your computer running at peak performance with the latest software and security protections. Updating your operating system is one way to keep you safe online, according to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. For example, updates can often help keep your personal data safe by patching potential security holes.
If you’re busy or forget to check for updates, you’re not alone. There are currently four MacOS Monterey updates available to the public, and that’s not counting the beta versions of each update. But you can customize your Mac to automatically check for, download, and install updates for you.
Here’s how to set up automatic updates on your Mac so you never miss an update. To set your Mac to automatically check for updates, follow these steps:
- Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner of your Mac screen.
- Click System Preferences.
- In the new window, select Software Update.
- At the bottom of the window, click the box next to Automatically keep my Mac up to date.
- Click Advanced.
- In the new window, you will see Automatically near the top of the screen, and five options with boxes next to them below.
- Click the box next to Check for Updates. This will enable two options: download new updates available and install system data files and security updates.
- Select Download new updates available. This will bring up the last two options, Install macOS Updates and Install App Updates from the App Store.
- Select the box to open.
- Click OK.
Depending on the options you choose, your device will now handle updates on its own, as well as updates for App Store downloads and security updates. Your Mac will still notify you when you need to restart to complete the installation, but your Mac will take care of all the work.
If automatic updates cause your Mac to restart at an inconvenient time, perform the steps above again and deselect Check for updates to turn off all automatic updates, or select the option you want to deselect.
