A few years ago, the Hubsan FPV X4 quadcopter was promoted as the world’s smallest consumer-grade Hubsan FPV X4 drone to provide first-person video.

This was enough to pique our interest, so we reviewed the matter. While we love most what it has to offer, there are some drawbacks. Now, Hubsan has solved almost all of these issues with the new and improved FPV X4 Plus. The original FPV X4 shoots SD (standard definition) video and records it on a MicroSD card in the radio remote control. This means the image quality isn’t great to begin with, and any glitches in the video transfer (of which there are many) will be recorded. One 3.7V/520-mAh lithium-ion batteryThe Hubsan FPV X4 Drone Batterypowers the Plus, keeping it flying with about 7 minutes of use per 30 minutes of charging. The battery marks another improvement, as it simply slides into the drone and snaps into place. In the original version, the wires had to be manually inserted into each other and then unceremoniously hidden behind to prevent them from getting in the way. It should be noted that during some of our “rougher landings” the Plus’s battery did partially eject, causing the drone to immediately lose power. Additionally, while the Micro SD card stays in place, it doesn’t make that satisfying click when inserted that the battery does, making you wonder if it’s actually fully engaged.Flying the original and the Plus back to back, it does look like the new version is easier to control. That said, you’ll still make it crash – a lot of times.

We’ve mentioned it before, but a “drift” mini-drone like this is harder to fly than a larger GPS-stabilized quadcopter. These boys may be more intimidating because they are bigger, louder, and more expensive, but they are also easier to operate. The Plus has withstood every crash so far , although it oddly lacks the shock-absorbing rubber feet of its predecessor. On our original FPV X4 demo rig, the camera stopped working since we posted the review. Claimed maximum control and video range is still 100 meters (328 feet) – we haven ‘t fully tested this yet. Video recording (and photos) are likewise still captured via physical buttons on the remote, and flight is handled using traditional dual joysticks. Finally, for all the absolutists out there, we should note that the Plus is indeed a bit bigger than the original – and for that matter, the original is no longer the world’s smallest FPV drone either. As far as we know, that title currently belongs to Axis Drones’ Vidius. That model can’t record onboard or in HD, though… and we think the two Hubsan’s look cooler. Our FPV X4 Plus, courtesy of GearBest, is currently on sale for just under $146. You can watch a clip of one of our test flights in the 30-second video below.
