The iPhone 14 may not be the only iPhone with old tech

Rumor has it that the iPhone 14 will be weaker than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and it sounds like in 2022, only the Pro iPhones will get Apple’s latest chipset. But one leaker believes this is just the beginning of something new.

Ming-Chi Kuo is a big figure in Apple’s leaks, and in a Medium post, they have said that “the latest processor chips will be exclusive to future high-end iPhone models.” So while we’ve heard that only the iPhone 14 Pro will get the A16 Bionic chip, it sounds like only the 15 Pro will get the A17 and so on, with non-Pro phones a year behind.

According to previous rumors, Apple is purely changing its smartphone chipset strategy in order to focus on making more components for its computers and laptops, with the M2 Mac taking priority.

While Kuo is a big name, they’re not always right, so don’t doubt that for now – we haven’t even confirmed that the iPhone 14 will use the A15 chip. But according to the report, Apple has a clear plan in mind.

Analysis: Focus on the Pro iPhone
Since Apple started making iPhone Pro models, they’ve clearly gone beyond standard equipment — they usually have more rear cameras and better-looking screens.

It sounds like Apple is focusing more on Pro phones with the chip change, which according to Kuo is an intentional shift — Apple knows more people will choose these devices now. Kuo said that Apple “is significantly increasing the shipment ratio of new high-end iPhone models to 55-60% in 2H22 (from 40-50% in the past).”

That’s likely to continue if Apple continues to provide better chips for its Pro phones, which, as Kuo points out, is also useful for brands like Sony and LG that make components for Pro devices.

Of course, on the other hand, it does make the non-Pro iPhones less attractive, so if these models are still worth the price, we’d like to see them drop in price. Otherwise, our best iPhone list might see fewer new additions each year.
