Apple has now released the public beta of iOS 16, which is free to download to your iPhone and should be a little more stable. All you need to do is enroll in the Apple Beta Software Program, enroll your device and install a profile to get the iOS 16 beta on your device. Let’s take a closer look below!
Before you start, back up your iPhone
All pre-release software can contain bugs and other issues that can make your device harder to use, which is why you should back up your device in case you want to revert to iOS 15.
By default, your iPhone should automatically back up every time you connect to power and Wi-Fi during your normal sleep time. However, if this backup feature is disabled, you can go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now to back up your device.
Additionally, you can back up your iPhone through the Finder on your Mac. Just connect your device to your computer, open Finder, select your device, and create a backup. Apple also recommends archiving your backups to avoid being overwritten by other backups.
Sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program
Once your device is backed up, it’s time to sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program, which allows anyone to try pre-release software for free and to provide feedback to Apple on quality, usability, and issues. Currently, you can test the iOS 16 beta on any compatible Apple device (iPhone 8 and later).
To sign up for the Apple Beta Software Program:
- Go to the Apple Beta Software Program website on your iPhone.
- Click the blue sign up button at the bottom of the page.
- Sign in to the Apple ID that came with your iPhone using Face ID or Touch ID.
- Read and accept the Apple Beta Software Program Agreement.
On the page that appears next, scroll down to Getting Started and click Register Your iOS Device, it should have a hyperlink in the paragraph that appears. This will take you to another page where Apple will list everything you need to do to download and install the iOS 16 beta on your iPhone.
Install the iOS 16 beta profile
If you scroll down this page, you will see a section called “Installation Profiles”. To download and install the iOS 16 beta on your device, you must now install a profile on your iPhone.
Profiles allow third parties to manage your device; in this case, you may be concerned about whether this is a privacy breach, but rest assured, this profile only allows Apple to deliver and manage iOS 16 betas on your device.
To install a profile, click the blue Download Profile button, then click Allow in the popup that appears. Next, quit your web browser, launch the Settings app, and click Profile Download at the top of the page. It should then display a window for the iOS 16 public beta profile. Click Install, enter your password, and then click Install twice. Finally, tap Reboot to get the over-the-air iOS 16 beta update.
Download and install the iOS 16 beta
Once your iPhone restarts, go to Settings > General > Software Update, click Download and Install and enter your passcode to begin the process of updating to iOS 16 beta.
If for some reason you don’t see the “Download and Install” option, you may need to wait a few minutes or clear memory to make room. You won’t be able to download iOS 16 if you don’t have enough space, so clean up your memory by deleting large files and uninstalling lots of apps.
Once the download is complete, restart your device and wait for the iOS 16 beta to install. When your iPhone boots up, you should see the iOS 16 beta download to your device.
