Asus’ new phone looks set to replace the iPhone in a special way

If you’re looking to buy a small phone, one of the companies that’s really at your service is Apple, with devices like the iPhone 13 mini that give you a lot of power in a compact body. But it sounds like one of the few names on the scene is gearing up to launch another product: the Asus Zenfone 9, which we’ve been hearing about in some leaks, has been confirmed for a July 28 release.

The launch event will take place simultaneously in New York, Berlin and Taipei at 6am PT/9am ET/2pm BST/9am EST.

It’s likely to be a nice mini phone – not only did early leakers say it has a 5.9-inch screen, but we can see it in someone’s hands in the teaser image above, and it’s clearly not a huge one mobile phone.

It seems to be teasing some of the phone’s features – there are cameras, game consoles, speakers, telescopes, and a few more things we just can’t put down. Some images shared by Asus don’t feature the front-facing camera, like the one above, but in others it’s there – so don’t expect an under-display camera (UDC).

Analysis: Taking over from Apple
While Apple is currently a major player in the small phone space, that may not be the case for long. There are rumors that there will be no mini version of the iPhone 14, marking the end of Apple’s short trip with compact phones.

If that turns out to be true, fans of smaller devices will have to look elsewhere — a challenge that few phone makers choose to make sub-6-inch devices.

Asus will likely be one of the few brands to meet this need, so the Zenfone 9 could be very popular.
