Earlier this week, Nokia unveiled a new feature phone with numbered buttons and a novel feature: a slot on the back for charging a pair of true wireless earbuds that came with the phone. The phone’s focus on audio isn’t surprising, as it’s the sequel to the music-focused Nokia phone launched 15 years ago.
Aside from the wireless earbud slot, the new Nokia 5710 XpressAudio looks a lot like the Nokia 5700 XpressMusic, a phone launched in 2007 that we found to be a “good enough music phone”, not commensurate with the Sony Ericsson Walkmans that dominated the time A music-centric phone. The Nokia 5700 has its own gimmick: the bottom half rotates 180 degrees, allowing users to switch between a T9 keyboard and a face full of audio control buttons.
The new Nokia 5710 doesn’t rotate, but it has media control buttons in the upper right corner and extra-large volume buttons in the upper left corner. While its specs don’t match modern smartphones — it has a 2.4-inch Quad VGA display, 128MB of internal storage expandable up to 32GB via MicroSD, and 48MB of RAM — it does have an internal FM tuner and MP3 player. People looking for basic phone features may find the music-oriented Nokia 5710 the perfect device they didn’t expect to find in 2022.
