ThinkPads typically feature simple, straightforward designs that blend in just about anywhere, and the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 9 is no exception. It features a steel-gray aluminum chassis, much of which is made from recycled materials. The edges of the chassis have a slightly smoother, sleeker texture, which gives the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 9 a nice premium touch. Plus, it meets the MIL-STD 810H military-grade durability standard, so it’s designed to withstand the occasional slip or drop.
The keyboard deck features cool gray keys with white lettering, and the classic ThinkPad TrackPoint in the middle. A fingerprint reader is also located on the bottom right corner of the keyboard. The trackpad is narrow, but there are physical keys on the top edge.

One feature I like about the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 9 is the privacy shutter built into the webcam. These features have become fairly common, especially on Lenovo laptops, and they’re always my favorite features.
The webcam beneath the privacy shutter is an FHD 1080p camera. In my test videos, it looked pretty good, but not as sharp as I’d like. However, while the video is a little blurry, the camera has a wide viewing angle and the built-in microphone has decent sound. It’s more than good enough for everyday video calls on Zoom or Google Meet.

The highest temperature we recorded was 80 degrees on the touchpad, and the bottom averaged 83.5 degrees. The center of the keyboard deck was slightly warmer at 90.5 degrees. The highest temperature we recorded overall was 91.5 degrees between the two bottom vents on the bottom of the keyboard deck.
