In everyday use, the Venue 11 Pro performs just as well as its peers, and it has some unique advantages, including a solid build and built-in keyboard that make it feel more like a laptop than a Surface. On top of that, it comes with a default Full HD 1,920×1,080-pixel display, which is quite rare for a screen this size.

Design and Features

When the Venue 11 Pro is in laptop mode and connected to its thick keyboard dock, it looks and feels very similar to other recent ultraportables, even echoing the classic netbook design of many of the Atom-powered ultra-thin laptops sold years ago. However, when picked up, the weight and balance feel wrong, as the top-heavy clamshell body threatens to topple over at any moment. In actual use, the system actually stayed upright most of the time, thanks in part to the small kickstand-like edge where the keyboard and screen meet.

Out of the box, the screen is quite thick for an 11.6-inch tablet, as evidenced by the pill-shaped plastic button in the center of the hinge. Unlike some of the more plasticky-feeling 10- and 11-inch Windows 8 tablets we’ve tested, the Venue 11 Pro can probably handle some bumpy moves, and the soft-touch coating on the back isn’t prone to smudging or scratching. One problem with the hinge/connection is that pulling the screen away from the keyboard dock almost always resulted in me accidentally pressing the power button, which is located on the top edge of the tablet.

As a standalone tablet, the Venue 11 Pro offers decent on-screen input capabilities, but the accelerometer isn’t overly sensitive. Volume controls are on the side, along with Micro-USB and SD card slots, so it’s fairly easy to use it as a standalone device.

Of course, for a more all-day experience, you’ll want to add a keyboard and touchpad or mouse. Dell makes that easy with a snap-on keyboard dock that transforms the combined system into a traditional clamshell laptop. The dock also comes with its own built-in

, which more than doubled the Dell Venue 11 Pro  battery life in our testing.

But the story isn’t all positive. I occasionally experienced lag or missed keys when using the keyboard. The keyboard is physically connected to the tablet rather than using Bluetooth, so this was more surprising, though we’ve experienced similar issues in the past with other hybrid tablets. The touchpad on the keyboard base is too small to do much more than basic on-screen navigation. While it felt more responsive than the keyboard, scrolling web pages with two fingers was difficult, as was selecting blocks of text. On a small tablet system like this, however, one would probably use the on-screen touch controls for most navigation.

One reason the Venue 11 Pro stands out from other small Windows tablets is that it comes with a Full HD 1,920×1,080-pixel 10.8-inch display. It’s an IPS display, so it’s very sharp even from wide angles, and the screen isn’t so glossy that you don’t have to put up with glare all the time. Audio from the built-in dual speakers sounds thin, but it’s more than adequate for casual video viewing. Connectivity, Performance, and

For a thin and light tablet, the Venue 11 Pro manages to offer quite a bit of connectivity. The HDMI and SD card slots are small and useless without an adapter or dongle, so keep that in mind if you like to travel light.
