Google Pixel 6A vs. Pixel 5A with 5G: Big changes highlight new $449 phone

Google’s Pixel 6A is here, and it represents a change from last year’s Pixel 5A and 5G in almost every way. Its new design is inspired by the beautiful Pixel 6, smaller screen, Google’s Tensor processor and camera features like the Magic Eraser that debuted on the Pixel 6. Let’s take a look below!

screen and design
As expected, Google‘s A-series borrows the design of its latest flagship Pixel once again. Not only is the Pixel 6A smaller than the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, but it’s also more compact than the 5A with 5G. Compared to last year’s device, the Pixel 6A has a 6.1-inch screen, while the 5A’s 5G’s 5.34-inch screen.

Both displays are OLED and use Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 cover glass. The Pixel 6 uses the new Gorilla Glass Victus. The 6A does have an improved contrast ratio of over 1 million to 1, as well as a “high brightness mode.” The latter two features appear to be carried over directly from the Pixel 6 series.

The 6A’s front-facing camera is now centered, unlike the 5A’s top-left position. Also in line with the 6-Series is the rear design with a camera bar. Though upon closer inspection, this camera strip appears to be a mix of the Pixel 6 series and the Pixel 7 that Google also teased at its IO developer conference.

Both the Pixel 5A and 6A are IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. The 6A ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack and 5G found on the 5A, but did move its fingerprint sensor below the display. However, neither device supports wireless charging.

Processors, 5G and Storage
As one might expect, Google‘s latest Pixel runs on its Tensor chip, the same chip that powers the 6 and 6 Pro. Last year’s 5G-equipped Pixel 5A was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G processor.

Both phones have 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, although the Pixel 6A’s LPDDR5 RAM should be more power-efficient, and its storage is UFS 3.1, which could see some performance gains.

Both phones support 5G. We should add that it appears that only Verizon’s Pixel 6A will support mmWave 5G. If you want the device, the carrier will charge you $500, a $50 premium over the regular Pixel 6A that Google unlocks directly.

camera
The Pixel 5A and 6A share a very similar camera setup. Both primary lenses are 12.2-megapixel dual-pixel primary lenses with f1.7 aperture and 77-degree field of view. Google touts the primary sensor on the 6A as a wide-angle lens.

The ultrawide on the 6A is also 12 megapixels, a change from the 16-megapixel ultrawide on the 5A and 5G. As for the front-facing shooter, both are 8-megapixels, though the 6A has a slightly larger field of view (84 degrees versus 83 degrees on the 5A and 5G).

However, the biggest changes appear to be on the software side. Google gave the 6A some of the big camera upgrades it had on the 6 line last year, including a “magic eraser” for removing people or objects from photos, and a “face blur” that helps keep faces visible even as people move and “Real Tone” for accurate skin tones capture.
