How to reset a locked Samsung phone

There are many ways to unlock a Samsung phone, so in general you’d be better off not doing it if possible. But if you’ve exhausted your options and are still locked — or plan on resetting your phone anyway — then you can reset it without unlocking it.

Doing so will delete all data – again, if possible, it’s best to unlock your phone first so you can make sure all data is backed up. Below, we’ll explain how to do this in a few simple steps. Note, however, that in most cases, you’ll need access to your Google account to reset your phone without unlocking it first. Let’s take a look below!

The quick steps are as follows:

  1. Turn off your phone
  2. Open the recovery menu (usually by pressing the volume up and side buttons)
  3. If prompted, enter your Google Account details
  4. Select “Wipe Data/Factory Reset” or “Erase All User Data”

How to reset a locked Samsung phone
The steps to reset a locked Samsung phone are briefly described above, but if you get stuck, read on for the detailed step-by-step process.

  1. Turn off your phone
The first step is to turn off your Samsung phone, but it’s easier said than done if you’re locked out, as it will ask you to enter your PIN, password, or pattern. If you don’t remember your security information, then you’ll have to wait for your phone to drain and automatically shut down.
  2. Open the recovery menu
After turning off the phone, you must now boot it into the recovery menu, which means using a specific button combination to turn it on.

The exact combination will depend on the Samsung phone you have, but for most newer Samsung phones, especially any Samsung phone that only has volume buttons and side buttons, you should press the volume up and side buttons until you feel a vibration and see the Samsung logo, then release them. This method works on products like the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Z Fold 3.

If your phone has both a power button and a Bixby button, you should press the volume up, power, and Bixby buttons at the same time, hold them until you feel a vibration, and release them.

Finally, if your Samsung phone has a separate physical home button below the display, then you should press volume, home and power at the same time until you feel a vibration. When done, let go of the power button but hold the other buttons, then when you feel a second vibration, you can let go of the rest.

In the vast majority of cases, one of these methods will work, but some phones use volume down instead of volume up for some reason, so if it doesn’t work, try using that button.

Also, some Samsung devices require you to plug your phone into a computer or connect a USB headset through a USB port for these button combinations to work.

  1. Enter your Google Account details
Your phone has restarted and it should take you to the recovery menu, but before accessing this menu, you may be asked to enter your Google account information, which is your registered email and password. This is to prevent a stolen phone from being reset.

If you know your email but not your password, you can reset or recover the latter using the Google Account Recovery page. If you don’t know your email or password, you will need to send the phone along with proof of purchase to an authorized Samsung Service Center, where they can reset it for you.

  1. Reset your phone
On the recovery menu, you should see an option that says “Wipe data/factory reset” or “Erase all user data.” Use the volume buttons to navigate to this option, then press the power button to select this option.

You will be asked to confirm several times, so use the same button to select “Yes” until the process begins. This process may take a few minutes, but when it is complete, the words “Data wipe complete” will appear on your phone, and you can press the power button to select “Restart Device”.

When your device restarts, you may be asked for your Google password. If you’ve gotten this far, you probably know a few things, but if you don’t, try the advice in step 3.
