Samsung has announced the Galaxy Tab S2, a sleek, thin, metal tablet available in two screen sizes: 8-inch and 9.7-inch.
The two devices have very similar specs, with both featuring octa-core 1.9GHz/1.3GHz processors, 8MP rear cameras and 2.1MP selfie cameras, 3GB of RAM, 32 or 64GB of storage (expandable via microSD card), and fingerprint scanners. The biggest difference is the Galaxy Tab’s battery: the 9.7-inch model has a 5,870mAh capacity, the same as the smaller 8-inch model, while the Galaxy Tab S2 battery has a 4,000mAh capacity. While both devices are ultra-thin (0.22 inches), there’s a big difference in weight: 389 grams for the 9.7-inch model and 265 grams for the 8-inch model. While these specs seem pretty consistent with what to expect from Samsung’s next flagship tablet, there are subtle but important differences compared to last year’s Galaxy Tab S models. Both tablets are slightly larger (10.5-inch and 8.4-inch, respectively), but have a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio.
The new Galaxy Tab S2 tablets both have a 2,048 x 1,536-pixel resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio (yes, just like the iPad and iPad mini), which means they’re better suited for reading than watching videos.
