Samsung is the undisputed leader when it comes to foldable phones, and there are other companies trying to make foldable smartphones. As we’ve written before, the Korean brand is clearly ahead of the competition when it comes to foldable devices. And with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 (check out their reviews here), Samsung has further widened that gap. Because, with these two devices, Samsung has brought foldable phones closer to full-fledged productivity devices and not just technological quirks. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is similar to the previous Fold devices – it’s a phone that folds up to become a tablet. However, it’s different. Different enough for us to call it the most powerful foldable phone ever. This isn’t based on a few weeks of review – we’ve been using the Galaxy Z Fold 3 for a few months and haven’t found anything that would change our opinion.
The Fold 3 tablet version is also very good. The display feels smooth to the touch, a far cry from the plasticky feel of the first Fold (which some people ripped off thinking it was some kind of screen protector). Furthermore, the transition from the outer screen to the inner screen is also very smooth. This is actually the most amazing element of the Z Fold 3 – just unfold it and you’ll find that you’ve gone from a traditional phone display to something that resembles a tablet.
It’s especially useful when you’re watching videos, working on detailed documents, or browsing websites. The stereo speakers add to the immersive experience when you’re playing games or watching shows. You can even open the Z Fold 3 in half and use it as a mini-notebook of sorts – supported apps will use the bottom half as a keyboard and the top half as a display. Mind you, its usefulness is limited because the “display” is a bit small – we preferred to fully unfold the device and type! Battery on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 Battery
The same slightly smaller 4400 mAh capacity with support for 25W fast charging, though in keeping with the latest high-end flagship fashion in some quarters, there’s no charger included in the box. If you really use this device to its full potential, a day of normal use is about right. We recommend turning down the refresh rate to get the most out of the battery. The foldable also supports 11W wireless charging, but it takes about an hour and forty minutes to charge this foldable from 0 to 100 using a 25W charger. A bit slow by the “half-hour charge” standard set by some Never Settlers, but not too bad really.
Samsung’s added S Pen support, which is really the icing on the cake – while you don’t get the same level or class of features as the Note (the S Pen is also a special Fold version of the S Pen), you have plenty of freedom to doodle, sketch and mark up, and the large display is a treat. The unfolded Z Fold 3 is stunning.
But if the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is stunning when folded, it’s a bit disappointing when folded. The 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED display does look beautiful, but its rather odd 2268 x 632 pixel resolution means content on it looks a bit stretched and odd, although its 120 Hz refresh rate does make scrolling smooth and fast. At 67.1mm, the external display is also pretty narrow – even phones like the Redmi Note 10 Pro are 76.5mm wide (the iPhone 13 is 71.5mm wide) – which means typing on it can be a bit of a struggle at times. The S Pen doesn’t work on the external display, but that’s really not a huge downside.
Don’t get us wrong – the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s external display is not bad at all. It’s very usable and really does allow you to see everything from the perspective of the phone. It’s more than enough as long as you’re performing basic tasks like taking and making calls, replying to the odd message (briefly), checking social networks and doing some basic web browsing. However, it just pales in comparison to the internal display, so to speak.
