This year, Google is changing things up a bit. Not only will the tech giant release its annual flagship in August, earlier than usual, but it will also be launching four devices worldwide. In addition to the regular Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, we’ll also get a larger Pixel 9 Pro XL… and a Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Yes, that’s right, we’re not getting a Pixel Fold 2, but a Pixel 9 Pro Fold foldable phone. This phone will steadily build on the first Pixel Fold, changing the overall design, shape, and internal hardware.

Compared to the Pixel Fold, which has a more rectangular shape and is wider when folded, the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be taller and slightly narrower. This makes the Pixel Fold a completely different foldable phone, which is very convenient to use with one hand thanks to the extremely practical cover screen.

We also expect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to be thinner and lighter

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open is a very light foldable phone, weighing only 239 grams (or 245 grams, depending on the color version you choose). The foldable phone also sports an almost square aspect ratio on the inside, but the cover screen also strikes a perfect balance between size and one-handed usability.

One thing that must be addressed is the display crease, which is the key to all foldable phones. Fear it, run from it, the crease will come. That being said, the OnePlus Open has an almost negligible crease, making it the closest device to crease-free we have ever seen. On the other hand, the Pixel Fold has one of the deepest creases, so the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a lot of room for improvement in this regard.

The OnePlus Open is an IPX4-rated device, which means it is not dustproof, but splashproof. The recent Galaxy Z Fold 6 resists dust larger than 1mm, so we expect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to also pull similar features from Google’s pocket.

Display differences

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to feature an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.3-inch outer screen. Both displays will be OLED with dynamic refresh rates between 1 and 120Hz. We have a hunch that the peak brightness of both displays could be quite high, just like the rest of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 9 series.

Performance and Software

Which one will win out?

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold will be powered by the Tensor G4 chipset, which is based on a 4nm manufacturing process. In fact, all Pixel 9 devices will be equipped with this chip. The performance and efficiency of the Tensor G4 will be a considerable leap over the Pixel Fold that came with the Tensor G2.

The OnePlus Open, on the other hand, is powered by the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is no longer the best chipset in Qualcomm’s arsenal. However, it is still a fairly powerful chipset that will provide excellent performance in most tasks.

The OnePlus Open comes with 16GB of RAM, and we expect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to also come with 16GB of RAM, as the device is quite demanding with the on-device AI processing. The OnePlus Open doesn’t have that many AI features, while we expect the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to come with a lot of them. Camera

The real selling point of foldable phones is not the camera performance, but these two phones are no slouch

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold may use the same triple-camera setup as the Pixel Fold, so there will be no major changes in hardware. However, some leaked renders suggest that the foldable phone may have a fourth camera on the back, but it is more likely to be a ToF depth sensor rather than another telephoto camera.

Last year’s Pixel Fold was equipped with a 48MP main camera, an 8.8MP ultra-wide angle, a 10.8MP telephoto camera (with 5x optical zoom), and two selfie cameras (an external 9.5MP camera and an internal 8MP camera).

Meanwhile, the OnePlus Open is also very good in terms of camera. The phone is equipped with a 48MP main camera + 48MP ultra-wide angle + 64MP 3X telephoto (6X sensor built-in zoom, maximum zoom 120X). The main camera’s stacked sensor is interesting: it’s one of Sony’s new LYTIA sensors, specifically the LYTIA-T808, which delivers very good low-light image quality and motion. Battery Life and Charging

Pixel 9 Pro Fold Outperforms

We’ve heard that Google’s next foldable phone might come with a 4,560mAh

Pixel 9 Pro Fold battery

, which doesn’t sound particularly reassuring compared to the Pixel Fold’s 4,821mAh Pixel Fold battery. While the Tensor G4 will certainly be more efficient, it may not make up for the huge difference in battery life. Hopefully the new foldable phone will come with a larger battery.

The OnePlus Open, meanwhile, has a 4,806mAh

OnePlus Open battery

, which is pretty good for battery life. Interestingly, the OnePlus Open and the first-generation Pixel Fold were roughly tied in our custom battery test, but the OnePlus Open pulled ahead in our 3D gaming test.

When it comes to charging, there may be no competition: the OnePlus Open comes with super-fast 67W wired charging, which can fully charge in just 43 minutes. While the OnePlus Open doesn’t have wireless charging, it comes with a 67W charger in the box, which is great!

It’s unclear whether Google will offer faster charging in the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and we doubt it. We’ll likely get the same 33W wired and 23W wireless charging support on the upcoming phone, which will fully charge in an hour and a half.
