A report a few days ago claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro and regular iPhone 14 will feature next-generation OLED screens unlike anything on the market. While most of the iPhone 14 panels will come from Samsung, they’ll be better than the ones Samsung uses for its Galaxy S22 flagship this year. But the report may not be entirely accurate.
A new story claims that only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will feature next-generation OLED materials that Samsung has not yet used on its own phones. According to reports, the iPhone 14 models will use the same OLED material as the Galaxy S22.
iPhone 14 Pro vs iPhone 14: Display Differences
Even without any iPhone 14 rumors, we know what to expect from the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models in terms of display performance. All four devices will feature OLED panels, but they won’t be identical.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus/Max will feature low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLEDs. These panels run at a static 60Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max will feature low temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) TFT OLED displays. The panels support ProMotion, Apple’s dynamic refresh rate that supports rates between 10Hz and 120Hz. Combined with the recent iPhone 14 rumors, we think the Pro model will get an improved LTPO panel. The refresh rate should be as low as 1Hz refresh so that Apple can provide users with always-on functionality.
Additionally, there are rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro models will feature a pill-hole OLED display design. The regular model will keep the same notch as the iPhone 13. An industry source recently said that the iPhone 14 models receiving Samsung displays will feature the new M12 OLED material. This will lead to improvements in display performance regarding color accuracy and energy efficiency. These reports follow rumors in mid-February that Samsung decided not to use the latest M12 OLED display in the Galaxy S22. But Samsung is reportedly still selling Apple’s M12 OLED displays for the iPhone 14 series.
Next-Generation OLED Screen Materials
According to reports, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus/Max will use last year’s M11 OLED screen technology. The Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus also feature M11 OLED displays. The entry-level Galaxy S22 has an older OLED panel that encapsulates the M10 pixel material.
The M12 OLED screen will be used in the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Samsung will apparently also use the more expensive M12 material for the foldable OLED displays of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Flip 4.
In addition, LG will also use different OLED display materials for the iPhone. LG calls its collection of OLED materials RS. The latest OLED material is called RS-L, Elec said. This is said to be the M12 equivalent, and LG will supply the RS-L panel for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. LG already supplies RS-K panels for the iPhone 13.
Interestingly, LG will also offer RS-L panels for the regular iPhone 14. While the difference between the M12 and RS-L is unclear, iPhone 14 models with LG panels should still feature 60Hz LTPS screens. Only the iPhone 14 Pro Max will use the LTPO variant.
