What you need to know

  1. Huawei released Hongmeng OS 3, focusing on a seamless experience between mobile devices and smart home products.
  2. The new version is touted as 11% lower power consumption and 18% faster.
  3. HarmonyOS 3 will enter eligible devices starting in September.
With the debut of the Huawei MatePad Pro 11, Huawei also introduced HarmonyOS 3, the latest version of its Android alternative that originally came out in 2019.

HarmonyOS 3 builds on HarmonyOS 2 with a host of multitasking features and a new look. Huawei is expected to roll out the new version to eligible devices in September.

One of the main talking points of the new release is a seamless experience across mobile devices and smart home products. HarmonyOS 3 lets you continue using your Huawei tablet wherever you left your Huawei smartphone without relying on a shared Wi-Fi network.

This function works when two devices are next to each other. For example, a tablet automatically connects to your phone’s network and acts as a mirror, displaying SMS messages sent to your phone. You can even answer calls on the tablet or play mobile games on the big screen.

HarmonyOS hyperterminal service also adds more devices, including monitors, printers, ink screens, watches, cockpits and smart glasses. It allows you to log in to more devices and link with various other devices with one-click connection.

The system’s universal cards can also be customized with style, shape and color, as well as options to add text and stickers. To keep your screen neater, HarmonyOS 3 allows you to stack cards of the same size or combine service cards, system buttons and shortcuts.

HarmonyOS 3 also lets your phone connect to two headphones at the same time, allowing you to share music without sharing your Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2.

On the privacy front, the new OS version tracks how often each app accesses your location, camera, microphone, files or contacts, and displays a log of the information in a graph from which you can revoke permissions individually. Like many of the best Android phones, Huawei‘s HarmonyOS 3 devices will be wary of malware-infected apps and other security risks.

The updated version also boasts higher performance, with 11% lower power consumption, 7% faster app launch and 18% smoother interface.
