Five years ago, I bought my first robot vacuum and was deeply disappointed by the amount of work it required. Even with an automatic emptying tower, the vacuum required constant maintenance—emptying, rescuing, freeing obstacles from the rollers. The accompanying mopping robot was so useless that I left it under the couch for a year. But today’s floor robots do more than just vacuum and mop—they’re becoming fully autonomous creatures. The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra ($1,199.99) is a very useful vacuum and mop robot that requires almost no maintenance. I’ll never use the robots of the past again. This generation of robot vacuums is much more autonomous
The prices of robot vacuums have dropped dramatically in recent years, and many come with automatic emptying towers. Plus, some robot mops require you to remove the mop pad, wash it, replace it, and then they push the mop pad (and all the germs and dirt it’s attracted) onto the floor. Sometimes, like the Roomba i7 and Braava, they’re supposed to work with each other (spoiler: they don’t even seem to like each other). The S8 is part of a new generation of floor robots that vacuum and mop. What’s more, they fill, empty, wash, and dry themselves, and only put clean water on the floor. You refill the clean water station and empty the dirty water station every few weeks, and change the vacuum cleaner bag about once a month.
This robot uses lasers
Like most of the new robots I’ve tried, Roborock uses lidar, which means it can detect objects without bumping into them—it uses light detection and ranging (lasers!) to detect space. Soon after leaving the base for the first time, a near-perfect outline of the room appeared on the map. I’ve come to realize that the only downside to lidar, compared to bumping and turning, is that new robots don’t try to enter a space if they sense an obstacle; they avoid it. So, while my Roomba i7 would go right through the curtain between my two rooms, the new robot would interpret it as a wall. Roborock, on the other hand, got closer to walls than any other new robot I’ve tried.
The S8 Mop Even Takes on Heavy-Duty Mopping Jobs
The Roborock can mop and vacuum at the same time, and so far, I’ve never accidentally left the mop on my carpet. You can set the intensity for vacuuming and mopping, or have the robot do just one or the other, but not both. In the month I tried this robot, my dog left the worst muddy trails imaginable on the white tile through the doggie door. Thirty times a day, a new muddy paw print was left. The Roborock would quietly and quickly go over to mop the floor, and by the time it was done, the mud was completely gone. It didn’t matter if the mud was wet or dry, which means it does a better job than the latest Dyson mop I’ve tested. Plus, it doesn’t carry mud to any other spaces. The entire floor stays pristine; the mop pad rinses a fluffy white after the muddy path (I checked!) and I can send the Roborock over every 30 minutes or so without
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra battery needs more time to charge.
Getting stuck is much less likely with the Roborock
The vacuum’s performance was equally impressive—while it has wheels like all other floor robots, the Roborock doesn’t mind large pieces of debris on the floor. Tags, toy fluff, and the occasional dog treat didn’t seem to matter, either as the vacuum was patrolling the floor or as it was emptying out from under the vacuum. The robot’s wheels only got caught on wires under the couch once or twice. Common obstacles that plague other robots, such as carpet transitions or thresholds, didn’t bother the Roborock as much. While I occasionally had a yarn-related mishap and had to extricate the robot cleaner, it didn’t seem to be a big deal. I simply set the robot back on the floor; it quickly reoriented itself and got back to work.
The S8 is equipped with the latest features, such as joystick control
The S8 also has some other new features that I think are essential for a robot vacuum, such as joystick functionality, so you’re less likely to need to rescue your robot. You can use the map to direct it directly via the joystick, and the map shows you with high accuracy where the robot is in the space at any given time. You can also set up zones to further clean specific spaces (like under a high chair or in front of a dog door), specifically by setting a pin on the map and the robot will go directly to that area. There is a very beautiful 3D version of the map that visualizes the furniture in the space, but other than the pleasure of first glance, I prefer the 2D version. I like that Roborock can tell you exactly how much life is left for each part that needs to be replaced, from sensors to brushes to filters and dust bags.
