Huawei P40 Pro review: design

It’s not just about the OS, and I thought it best to talk about everything else before I harp on about the potential pitfalls of choosing a phone that only runs an open-source version of Android. You won’t be surprised to hear that the P40 Pro meets all of the expectations we’ve had from Huawei so far – it’s the kind of phone that sits in the upper tier of flagships, and you can tell just by looking at it.

It has a 6.58-inch bezel-less display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a Leica quad rear camera, and up to 50x hybrid zoom. The phone is powered by Huawei’s fastest homemade processor, the Kirin 990, along with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (expandable with Huawei’s Nano Memory cards). It’s IP68-rated for dust and water resistance, has a 4,200mAh Huawei P40 Pro battery, and comes with 5G as standard.

Next up is the P40 Pro’s new “overflow” display. Huawei calls this a “quad-curved” design, as the 6.58-inch screen wraps around not only the sides of the phone, but also the top and bottom. The curvature isn’t as great as the 88-degrees on the Mate 30 Pro, and I don’t think there’s any real benefit in terms of usability, but it’s a pleasing design decision regardless.

Life

Of course, the P40 Pro is powered by Huawei’s fastest mobile chipset ever, the Kirin 990. It’s a new octa-core chip built on a 7nm manufacturing process – something we first saw in the Huawei Mate 30 Pro – with the cores grouped into three groups: two performance-based Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.86GHz, two more mid-power cores running at 2.36GHz, and four Cortex-A55-based cores running at 1.95GHz.

How do these numbers translate into actual performance? In testing, I found the Kirin 990 to be about 18% faster in multi-core processing compared to the previous-generation Kirin 980 (which powers the P30 Pro). Huawei’s own app store may indeed be limited at the time of writing, but the P40 Pro will be able to run anything you throw at it with ease.

I had worried that Huawei phone battery life might suffer due to the 90Hz screen, but ultimately, this phone performs very well. At the phone’s native screen resolution, with the high refresh rate setting turned on, the P40 Pro lasted 21 hours and 36 minutes before needing a recharge. That’s pretty good by any standard, and better than the performance of the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro – both of which have regular 60Hz screens. Huawei P40 Pro review: Camera

Before we get into the pros and cons of the software package, it’s worth taking a close look at the real star feature: the quad Leica camera array. First up, the main camera is a 50-megapixel (f/1.9) flanked by a 12-megapixel (f/3.4) 5x telephoto zoom lens. Both are optically stabilised and use the less commonly used RYYB filter, which replaces the green element of the filter with a yellow Huawei P40 Pro review: Conclusion

What I do know is that buying the Huawei P40 Pro is a risky move. Launching a high-priced flagship phone without access to popular apps is not an attractive move, and if the Mate 30 Pro was released to a lukewarm reception last year, then I find it hard to imagine Huawei benefiting from it.
