Based on code found in iOS 16 and tips from reputable sources, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are widely expected to get the always-on display feature — and now we have more details on what it will look and work on.
MacRumors has obtained this insider tip and covers every aspect of the new feature. When always-on mode is enabled, widgets will be visible on the lock screen, e.g. fade in and out in an imperceptible way to prevent burn-in.
For lock screen wallpapers with a depth effect, the effect will be removed and dimmed in always-on mode. The foreground will be darkened and tinted with some user-customizable highlighting.

It seems that settings like wallpaper, colors, fonts, and widgets are consistent between always-on and full-on lock screens, so you won’t be able to set different options for the two different modes of operation.
According to the new information, notifications will appear on the always-on display and scroll from the bottom as they arrive. There may be a notification counter at the bottom of the screen, and it sounds like various parts of the notification alert interface can be customized by the user.
What’s more, the status bar will be rearranged to take advantage of the extra space created by the pill-shaped cutout unique to another Pro model. We’re sure to find out at Apple‘s event on Wednesday, September 7th.
Analysis: The Pro model is different
The always-on display is one of several upgrades rumored to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models — Apple has apparently decided to split its flagship phone lineup into two distinct tiers.
If the leaks so far are to be believed, the Pro and Pro Max models will feature the new A16 Bionic processor, while the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max stick to the A15 Bionic chipset that powers the current iPhone 13 lineup. Rumors Apple will stick to this approach for years to come, he said.
It is also said that the Pro model will also come with superior screen technology. Add in all the usual goodies you get from the Pro model, including an improved camera system compared to the more affordable iPhone version, and it looks like there’s going to be a big leap to the Pro level.
This may be an attempt to push more people to buy more expensive iPhones, but it does make the iPhone 14 feel like a less substantial upgrade to what we already have. Time will tell if this is a strategy that ultimately pays off for Apple.
