If you’ve been waiting for the Apple Watch SE 2, you’re probably wondering why bother, because while there’s a good chance we’ll see the wearable at the September 7 iPhone 14 launch event, it doesn’t sound like it . Will be a big upgrade.
Here’s what Mark Gurman said, a journalist and leaker with an excellent track record with Apple information. In his latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Gurman claimed that Apple will unveil the Apple Watch SE 2 on September 7, but it will be nearly identical to the original Apple Watch SE.
The design is apparently the same, and the main upgrade is said to be the new chipset; a move from Apple’s own S5 to the S8 chip. It sounds like a jump, but the S6 and S7 chipsets are basically the same, so it’s more of a two-generation shift than three.
Still, it’s likely to offer significant power and efficiency gains, meaning it’s probably a worthwhile upgrade, though probably not from the original Apple Watch SE. There may even be an argument to buy the old model instead of the old one, given that the new model is likely to be more expensive as well.
Of course, this is just speculation at the moment, there could be other improvements, or the chipset change could prove transformative.
This isn’t the only Apple Watch news Gurman has provided, either, as he claims that, unsurprisingly, we’ll see the Apple Watch 8 that day too. This will apparently also contain the S8 chipset – so the Apple Watch SE 2 won’t be left behind in power. But the Apple Watch 8 will reportedly have other upgrades than the SE 2 expected. These include temperature sensors and “female health functions related to fertility.”
Finally, said to be the top-of-the-line Apple Watch Pro, it apparently has the same features as the Apple Watch 8, but with a bigger display, bigger battery, and a different design. Includes sturdy titanium case. While this will be the top-of-the-line model — expected to cost at least $900 — it’s not just a price that might put people off. Its large size may also make it unappealing to some consumers, especially those with smaller wrists, Gurman claims.
Analysis: Apple Watch for everyone
While the Apple Watch SE 2 sounds like a fairly modest upgrade — and it could be a disappointment to some potential buyers — that’s okay, as Apple looks more than ever willing to pay for just about every need or Want to offer new wearables.
For those who just want to get an Apple Watch on the cheap, the Apple Watch SE 2 should do just that, while most buyers will likely focus on the Apple Watch 8, which has more upgrades.
Then, for those who want something really high-end, or just want a bigger screen or a sturdier design, the Apple Watch Pro will do the trick.
