5 Huge iOS 16 Features You Didn’t Know

iOS 16 is here, and we’re all enjoying all the big new features like an overhauled lock screen, revamped Messages app, and the holy grail of battery percentages always visible. While everyone scoffs at Apple’s heavily marketed details, the most impressive are always the secret features, and we’ve got five you didn’t know. Let’s have a look!

  1. The keyboard finally has haptic support
I’ve always loved the on-screen keyboard in iOS, but one thing I’ve been missing is the subtle tactility of every button press — something Android users have been enjoying for years now. But now, tucked away in the “Sounds & Haptics” menu in the Settings app, you can turn on this little vibration, which activates Apple‘s Taptic Engine to provide some physical feedback for every letter you type.
  2. Better bokeh on the iPhone 13
Photography and videography will be noticeably improved on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Granted, these cameras are already pretty good, but with a few small software tweaks, the blur effect has been impressively improved.

The difference is subtle, but it adds a new level of SLR drama and storytelling to each shot. In portrait mode shots, the blur is no longer limited to the background, but is applied to objects in front of the subject close to the lens.

In video, especially in movie mode, the accuracy of the already excellent depth-of-field effect is much better around things like hair strands and glasses. All of this is an extension that iOS 16 does by removing themes on lock screen photos.

  1. Siri knows punctuation, so you don’t have to
Siri Dictation is a useful feature for quickly jotting down notes, messages, and emails just by speaking aloud. However, one thing that does break the flow is that every punctuation mark must be spoken to establish the correct sentence structure.

In iOS 16, Siri is now smart enough to recognize when punctuation is needed without you having to explicitly state it.

  1. View Wi-Fi password
Sharing Wi-Fi passwords with your friends is a frustrating process where you need to find the box, turn it over carefully without pulling out any wires, and take a picture of it. Of course, there’s also Apple Wi-Fi Sharing, which should do this seamlessly, but it doesn’t work with Android devices and has been popular in my own experience.

Right now, however, you just have to go into your Wi-Fi settings, hit the info button, and you’ll get a ton of info about your network, including passwords in plain text that you can copy and paste into a message to your partner middle!

  1. Use your iPhone to control your Apple Watch
It’s one of those features that’s both great for accessibility and great for tweaking watch settings, as Apple has integrated a sneaky new feature called Apple Watch Mirroring into iOS 16.

Simply put, to quote Ronseal, a British DIY brand that does exactly what it says on the tin. Watch Mirroring lets you control your Apple Watch with a variety of interactions from your phone—whether it’s taps and swipes, voice commands, or even head tracking.
