Apple unveiled a slew of stylish wearables at its “Far Out” presentation Wednesday, including the Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch Ultra and the new 2022 Apple Watch SE. While the Ultra is the most expensive option, you may find that the Series 8 fits your needs better.
All Apple series watches are a step above the SE versions, but if you’re new to the brand’s smartwatches or looking to upgrade, you might want to know how the Series 7 and Series 8 compare. Both have health tracking features and activity logs, but that’s how they stack up in terms of price, features, and aesthetics. Let’s take a look together!
Series 8 has more health and safety options
While both models have fall detection, emergency SOS, a blood oxygen sensor and a gyroscope, the Series 8 offers a set of tracking upgrades that help with health and safety. Apple has announced two new temperature sensors on the Series 8; one near the skin and one inside the display.
These sensors monitor body temperature during the day and night, but can also help women track menstrual periods and ovulation cycles. The log tracks a woman’s cycle history and issues notifications for any violations, which can help with family planning or potential health issues.
In the safety category, Apple now offers car crash detection on the Series 8 and all other new Apple smartwatches. This sensor alerts emergency responders and your emergency contacts if you do not respond after 10 seconds.

If you want the Series 8 to have a bigger screen, you’re going to have to give it up. Both the Series 7 and Series 8 have an always-on Retina display and a 41mm or 45mm face. Their similar designs use the same glass material for the screen and curved housing. Like the Series 7, the Series 8 comes with a dust- and crack-resistant screen.
Where they differ is the dial. The Series 8 has some additional options, including “Moon,” “Astronomy,” “Modular,” and “Metropolis.”
Apple Watch Series 8 and Series 7 have the same battery level
While Apple touts its 36-hour battery life when the Series 8 is in low power mode, the Series 7 will also be able to extend battery life when the WatchOS 9 update arrives. Currently, both watches have an 18-hour battery. Low-power modes will keep you alive by limiting certain features like sensors, always-on displays, or heart-tracking apps.
