iOS 16 is here: Learn how to download it to your Apple iPhone

Apple’s latest update to its iPhone operating system — iOS 16 — was released on Monday. We’ve figured out the coolest features, the most annoying ones, and the ones we’re still waiting for.

The latest mobile software update includes the ability to unsend and edit text messages, a customizable lock screen, smart cropping for photos, and a return to the status bar’s battery percentage. But you can’t try them out until iOS 16 is installed. The following will tell you how to download and install iOS16, let’s take a look!

Before you start, check if your iPhone is compatible?
Unfortunately, not every iPhone will receive the iOS 16 update. You need at least an iPhone 8 released in 2017 to run iOS 16. This also includes iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone SE (2nd generation and later).

Next, back up your iPhone
Getting new software can be exciting, but you should take some precautions before updating. You may not be happy with some of the features iOS 16 has to offer, so for whatever reason, you need to be able to downgrade back to iOS 15 – which requires you to back up your iPhone before updating.

By default, your iPhone should automatically back up every time you connect to power and Wi-Fi during your normal sleep time. However, if this backup feature is disabled, you can go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now to back up your device.

Additionally, you can back up your iPhone through the Finder on your Mac. Just connect your device to your computer, open Finder, select your device, and create a backup. Apple also recommends archiving your backups to avoid being overwritten by other backups.

Also, make sure to do these three things
You want the download and installation process to be as smooth as possible, the best way is to do the following:

  1. Make sure your iPhone is connected to a power source. You won’t be able to download iOS 16 if your battery is below 50%, so it’s best to have your phone plugged in when you update.
  2. Connect to a wireless network. You also won’t be able to download iOS 16 using cellular data, so connect to a stable Wi-Fi network.
  3. Clear enough storage space. iOS 16 files are about 5GB in size, if you run out of storage space, you need to clean up some files before you can download and install iOS 16. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to delete large files and apps.

How to Download and Install iOS 16
Now, once you’re all set up, turn on your iPhone and go to Settings > General > Software Update, wait a few seconds for the update to appear, then tap Download and Install for iOS 16.

If you see the Download and Install option for iOS 15.7, click the Upgrade to iOS 16 button at the bottom of the page, then click Download and Install for iOS 16. Enter your password to start the update process.

You should then see a loading bar with a rough estimate of how long the download process will take. Once the download is complete, restart your device and wait for iOS 16 to install. When your iPhone boots up, follow any prompts and you should see iOS 16 downloaded to your device.
