The iPhone 14 is finally here. It might seem like an evolution compared to last year’s iPhone 13, but for most people, it’s a nice upgrade. Those with an iPhone 8 or iPhone XR might want to consider the iPhone 14, as it may offer better performance, improved cameras, longer battery and 5G support. There are many reasons to upgrade to the iPhone 14. And, as is often the case, there are some reasons not to buy a new iPhone 14.
If you’re planning to buy an iPhone 14, here are four reasons to consider Apple’s latest entry-level iPhone.
Better camera
Of course, the Pro models have a hardware advantage over the standard iPhone 14 models, thanks to the extra telephoto lens. Still, the iPhone 14 with its two rear cameras (a main wide-angle and an ultra-wide-angle camera) takes perfect pictures. Compared to the iPhone 13, the iPhone 14’s main camera has a larger sensor and a new lens with a faster f1.5 aperture. Coupled with the new photon engine, the iPhone 14 is able to take better photos, especially in pitch-dark conditions. The iPhone 14 takes better shots in low light. Video quality is excellent in bright light, but in darker conditions details look blurry. Movie mode has been upgraded and can now record 4K video at 24 fps. Previously, you could only shoot in FHD at 30 fps. Then there’s a new video image stabilization mode called Action Mode. Essentially, it provides gimbal-like stabilization while you’re recording video.
Easy to repair
Visually, the iPhone 14 may look like the iPhone 13, but there’s one big difference between the two devices that no one talks about: ease of repair. Apple has redesigned the interior of the iPhone 14, allowing users to remove and replace the device’s glass back. Not only is this a big win for “right to repair,” but it also shows that it’s possible to make equipment with a more serviceable design. According to repair advocate and tool supplier iFixit, the high-end iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max don’t use the more repairable design found on the regular iPhone 14. Experts say that while the iPhone 14’s design looks identical to many past iPhones, it’s a step in the right direction and will make repairs easier and cheaper.
Car accident detection
Another major upgrade for the iPhone 14 is a new feature called “collision detection,” which won’t be available on the previous-generation iPhone. Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2 also introduced Crash Detection, which uses sensors and algorithms running on the device to detect collisions and automatically connect the wearer to emergency services if the wearer doesn’t respond. Emergency responders and contacts will then receive the wearer’s location.
Front camera
The iPhone 14’s front-facing camera is getting an upgrade, and it’s a big deal. The 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera features a new faster f1.9 lens and now features autofocus. So now, the front-facing camera focuses on the person in front of it, which should translate into better, sharper selfies. Selfie AF also comes in handy when you want to take group selfies.
