A few years ago Pentax was probably the leading supplier of premium amateur and semi-professional cameras in the UK, but its position has since declined. The last big brand to go digital had the dreaded *istD name, but later updated it slightly with L and S suffixes, but recently everything has changed and the K is back. First came the K100D with a new Image Stabilisation (AS) unit, now the K10D comes with AS and a host of new features designed to meet the needs of premium amateurs and semi-professionals. It comes with a plug, but it’s worth mentioning. This is one of the most comfortable grips, well made and has camera-like sealing. However, it has its own quirks. There is only one battery in the grip, and it is the original

that has to remove the grip to charge. On the plus side, you can use the extra space on the grip to store extra card holders.

Flash Options A pop-up flash is a useful addition to any camera, especially when using fill light rather than lighting the entire scene. This is well thought out. Clicking the Function (Fn) button at the bottom right of the main screen brings up the usual submenu. One of the four options is the flash setting. You can choose between Flash, Flash+Red-Eye, Slow Sync, Slow Sync+Red-Eye, and Rear-Curtain Sync. When the screen is on, you can use the dial on the back to adjust flash compensation from -2 to +1 stop in 1/2 or 1/3-stop increments. Very intuitive sophistication.

Battery life is very good, reaching three-quarters of a charge in an hour, even after a full day of shooting with confusing menus. For this we used the built-in flash, the dedicated Pentax Speedlite, and the extensive image removal feature.

By default, the camera produces files in JPEG format, which produces pleasing colors without oversaturation. You can configure settings in the menu to adjust the hue, saturation, contrast and sharpness of the image as needed. Digital Noise ISO settings range from 100 to 1600, and the camera has noise reduction settings at all speeds. There are some subtle differences at high ISOs, but you can get better results using a dedicated software package. Regardless, files shot at speeds up to ISO 800 are very useful, and being able to choose ISO sensitivity in increments of 0.5 or 1/3 gives you a lot of wiggle room.
