As the next Microsoft Surface event looms, early reports suggest we’ll see the release of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 was released more than a year ago, and we expect to see an upgrade to the lineup soon.

Release date
While Microsoft hasn’t given a specific date for the Surface Laptop 5’s release, we can make some guesses. Microsoft’s annual Surface event will take place on October 12 this year. This suggests the Surface Laptop 5 will be unveiled at the event, with Windows Central’s Zac Bowden claiming the laptop will launch later in October due to ongoing component shortages. Assuming that’s correct, the laptop will likely be unveiled during the Surface event and then open to the public a few weeks later.
Price
Microsoft has also been tight-lipped on pricing for the Surface Laptop 5, but we expect it to follow a similar pattern to other laptops in the lineup. The two latest laptops in the Surface Laptop range start at £999, so the Surface Laptop 5 will likely sit on the same stand.
Glasses
German tech site WinFuture reports that the Surface Laptop 5 will be equipped with the latest 12th-generation Intel Core processors, with a choice of Core i5-1235U and i7-1255U. Known for being included in power-efficient laptops, the Intel U-Series is for basic productivity laptops like the Surface Laptop line. Despite the recent announcement of Ryzen 7000-series processors, Microsoft doesn’t appear to be offering any AMD configurations this time around.
Regardless of the CPU options available, we’d expect the Surface Laptop 5 to have integrated graphics and no discrete GPU option, as this laptop isn’t aimed at content creators or gamers.
Additionally, Windows Prime’s spec sheet claims that the Surface Laptop 5 will feature a new 1080p webcam, which is an upgrade over the 720p webcam on the Surface Laptop 4. The same spec sheet also features a new and improved design with PixelSense Flow’s 120Hz refresh rate. This will result in a smoother experience for users, as Microsoft has used faster refresh rate technology on the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio.
It’s also expected to come with Windows 11 preinstalled, though that’s not surprising considering it’s a Microsoft laptop.
We can also see Thunderbolt 4 on the latest Surface Laptops, with XDADevelopers claiming that the Intel variant is now capable of supporting Thunderbolt docks and displays.
Design
Surface Laptop 5 comes in two sizes: 13.5 inches and 15 inches. Both variants appear to contain the same resolution, 2256×1504, while both have a 3:2 aspect ratio. Also, both should support Surface Pen and support touch.
The upcoming laptop should also be available in four different color options: Ice Blue, Matte Black, Sandstone, and Platinum. Two USB-C inputs are expected to be included – it’s unclear how many of them support Thunderbolt – a USB-A port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a Surface Connect port.
While specifics of the design haven’t been confirmed, we’d like to see the Surface Laptop 5 sport slim bezels, as our review last year complained about the Surface Laptop 4’s dated style.
More on the Surface Laptop 5 and other Surface devices we expect to see from Microsoft in October.
