Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro users don’t have to worry about FOMO when the new Pixel comes to market. Google plans to upgrade these older Tensor-driven devices to include some of the features found in the newer models.
These will be the Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro, both announced at Google’s October Pixel event earlier this month. Powered by the new Tensor G2 chip, the phones introduced a number of machine learning-driven features in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.
As it turns out, not all of these features are exclusive to Tensor G2-equipped phones. Phone Arena reports that several new features from the Pixel 7 are making their way to the Pixel 6. Here’s a detailed look at what current Pixel owners can expect.
New Tensor feature coming to Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro
The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have Clear Calling as one of Google‘s touted features, though the feature isn’t available when both phones go on sale today (October 13). Clear Calling uses machine learning to reduce background noise while enhancing the voice of the person calling you.
According to Pocketnow, the feature is expected to come to all Tensor-enabled Pixel phones in a December feature update, along with the ability to stop incoming calls by saying “silent.”
Another feature announced at the October event was Guided Frame, which uses haptic and audio feedback to help you position your phone when taking selfies. While this feature largely affects the visually impaired, it’s a smart way to make basic photo features easier for Pixel users. Fortunately, you don’t need a Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro to use this great accessibility feature.
Finally, Tensor-powered devices are improving on the Pixel’s Real Tone. This feature more accurately represents the skin tones of people of color. Real Tone is already available on Pixel 6 devices including the Pixel 6a, but the Pixel 7 version brings an updated algorithm that reduces noise and blur in low-light environments.
This updated algorithm will eventually appear in other Tensor-driven models in a software update, but there is no ETA on when that update will arrive.
Spatial Audio with Pixel Buds Pro
There’s an update for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro that requires specific Pixel accessories. Google is bringing Spatial Audio to the Google Pixel Buds Pro, creating 3D audio for listeners when using premium wireless earbuds.
When a software update for Pixel Buds Pro Spatial Audio is available, the feature will work when pairing the earbuds with a Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, or Pixel 7 Pro. Unfortunately, Pixel 6a owners don’t appear to be getting this feature update.
Other Pixel features on older devices
Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pros owners aren’t the only ones getting some trickle-down updates from the Pixel 7. The Pixel’s “at a glance” widget will now display your flight and gate numbers, as well as baggage claim information. Additionally, one-click audio transcription will allow Pixel users to convert audio messages to text with just a tap of the screen.
These features will eventually be available on all devices from the upcoming Pixel 4a and newer.
Some features are still exclusive to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro
Google can’t bring all its new features to older phones. The Super Res Zoom received some updates to the Tensor G2 chip, which allows Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro users to take 12.5MP photos with 2x digital zoom, which Google says will support the 2x telephoto lens optical zoom. Pixel 7 Pro users even get a further boost, with Super Res Zoom enabling up to 30x magnification when the feature is combined with the Pixel 7 Pro’s telephoto lens.
Another feature that users with older Pixel phones will miss is Face Unlock. There might be some hardware limitations we’re unaware of, but it doesn’t seem like the feature will be coming to older phones anytime soon – though the Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4XL have always had it.
