New iPad Pro 2022 release date, price, specs and features

The new Apple iPad Pro (2022) features the same Apple M2 chip as the Macbook laptop. There aren’t many other noticeable upgrades — the camera is the same as last year, as is the overall design. Still, the M2 chip should provide plenty of power for the multi-screen, multitasking capabilities that the new iPad OS 16.1 brings.

In addition to the new M2 chip, the iPad Pro (2022) can do some new things with the Apple Pencil 2. The tablet can detect when the pencil is within 12mm of the display and act accordingly. This means advanced capabilities for art and drawing applications, as well as new ideas for interfaces and text input.

The new iPad Pro (2022) models will connect to the web better than ever. Wi-Fi has been upgraded to include WI-Fi 6E, a new version of Wi-Fi 6 that sets a new radio frequency band for compatible devices. 5G-connected iPad Pros (2022) also have new frequency bands available, making them more compatible with 5G networks around the world. Let’s take a look at the new iPad Pro information in detail!

iPad Pro (2022) price
The new 11-inch iPad Pro is $799 / £899 / AU$1,399, which is especially fair to my British friends who are down £100 this year rather than upping the price like the iPhone 14 Pro. If you want an iPad Pro with 5G cellular, prices start at $999/£1079/AU$1,399.

The 12.9-inch iPad has a higher-quality screen than the 11-inch, and costs $1,099/£1,249/AU$1,399. For the 5G-connected model, you’ll pay $1,299 / £1,429 / AU$2,149.

iPad Pro 2022 specs and features
The most significant upgrade to the iPad Pro (2022) is the Apple M2 chip inside, the same chip Apple uses on its Macbook and Macbook Pro laptops. In other words, this is not a smartphone, this is a fully functional computer. Apple says the new chips will have 15 percent faster processing cores.

The new M2 chip in the iPad Pro will have an improved media engine. This means it will be able to play more complex, higher-resolution video and audio formats, including Apple ProRes video recordings. It also has improved image processing, and it will be the first iPad with a camera capable of recording video in Apple ProRes format. Apple states that this is the only device capable of recording ProRes video, editing it, and publishing it.

Otherwise the camera won’t get an upgrade. There’s a 12MP main camera and a 10MP ultra-wide-angle camera on the back, the same as last year. There’s a 12MP TrueDepth selfie camera on the front.

In fact, there seem to be no other real hardware upgrades at all, unless you count the new way the iPad Pro interacts with the Apple Pencil 2. This is most evident in art and design apps, but Apple also showed how the hover feature will be used across the operating system. When you hover over the text box, it expands, allowing you to write with a pencil. The new iPad Pro (2022) has enhanced performance when recognizing handwriting.

iPad Pro 2022 design and display
Apple hasn’t changed the look of the iPad Pro (2022) this year, although it might have been nice to have some color options in addition to silver and space gray.

Both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch have magnetic connectors on the side for peripherals, as well as Thunderbolt 4-capable USB-C ports. The iPad Pro (2022) has two speakers on the top and two speakers on the bottom. Although Apple has started removing the SIM card tray from the US iPhone 14 series devices, the cellular model still retains the SIM card tray.

The larger 12.9-inch display features Apple XDR technology’s mini-LED backlighting with full local array dimming. This means that IPS displays will look and function more like OLED screens, with very high contrast ratios and great colors. In fact, Apple has a special feature in iPad OS 16 to use the 12.9-inch iPad Pro as a color reference display for published work.

iPad Pro 2022 Camera and Battery
While the cameras on the iPad Pro (2022) didn’t get a real upgrade this year, the tablet’s camera technology did get a boost, thanks to the new Apple M2 chip.

The main camera is still a 12MP shooter, next to a 10MP ultra-wide-angle camera. On the front is a TrueDepth 12MP selfie camera that handles face unlock.

On the M2 chip, Apple added hardware-accelerated encoding and decoding for multiple video formats, including ProRes video. The new iPad Pro is the first iPad capable of recording video at up to 4K resolution at 30 fps in ProRes compression.

While the camera hasn’t been upgraded, the iPad Pro is now a more capable video editing device, even if you need to use it for footage.

For battery life, Apple claims the iPad Pro (2022) can last up to 10 hours when surfing the web or watching videos over Wi-Fi, and up to 9 hours on a cellular network. The 11-inch model uses a 28.65-watt-hour battery, while the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses a 40.88-watt-hour battery.
