iOS 16.1 on iPhone: Every notable new feature

Apple’s iOS 16.1 comes about a month after iOS 16, and comes with some tweaks and new features for compatible iPhones (and iPads with iPadOS 16). Here’s what’s new in iOS 16.1 and what each feature does. Let’s take a look together!

iCloud Shared Photo Library
Sharing photos with friends after a night out can be a hassle. But with iCloud Shared Photo Library, you can easily share photos and videos with up to five other people.

Anyone with access to the shared photo library can add, edit, and delete content from the library. You can upload photos from your iPhone camera directly to the library, and you can add photos to the library when you are with other people who have access to the library. However, you cannot participate in two shared libraries at the same time, and if you move photos from your personal library to the shared library, the photos will not be duplicated and will only be found in the shared library.

Live activity in dynamic island and lock screen
The dynamic island and lock screen of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are enhanced with Live Activities. With Live Activities, your Dynamic Island and lock screen display notifications from third-party apps, such as sports games and flights.

Apple Fitness Plus without Apple Watch
In iOS 16.1, you no longer need an Apple Watch to access Apple Fitness Plus. With iPhone 8 or later, you can track your fitness progress and goals right from your phone.

Battery display update
iPhones from the XR to the latest models now have the option to display the battery percentage in the battery meter icon. The font used for the battery icon has also been slightly increased to make it easier to read.

Wallpaper and lock screen updates
Apple has made it easier to customize wallpapers in iOS 16.1. From the Settings > Wallpaper menu, the option to add a new wallpaper is now more visually obvious, and you can choose to swipe between existing wallpapers. Additionally, when editing wallpapers from the lock screen, you can now choose to customize the lock screen or home screen.

Screenshot editing tool interface update
When you edit a screenshot using the Edit menu, delete, save, and copy options now appear in a smaller, less intrusive menu at the top of the screen. Previously, these options were at the bottom of the iPhone screen.

Wallet application upgrade
You can securely share car, hotel room and other Wallet app information via Messages and WhatsApp. Apple Card customers can also add to their daily cash by putting their savings into a high-yield savings account. You can also delete the Wallet app from your iPhone if desired.

Smart Home Connectivity with Matter
Matter, the new smart home connectivity standard, is now supported. That means you can control smart devices like Alexa and Google Assistant from your iPhone.

Clean Energy Charging Settings
A new clean energy charging switch has been added to the Battery section of Settings. This setting helps reduce your carbon footprint when you charge your iPhone. With clean energy charging on, your iPhone will selectively charge when low-carbon electricity is available. This setting appears to be on by default, but if you prefer, you can turn it off by going to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and tapping the toggle next to Clean Energy Charging.

Apple Books interface upgrade
If you’re reading a book on your iPhone, your Reader controls will automatically hide when you open Apple Books.

Bug fixes
Apple also fixed some bugs. These fixes address issues such as deleted conversations appearing in messages, some Dynamic Island content not appearing when using Reachability, and CarPlay not connecting when using VPN apps.
