Battery Life and Real-World Performance
In my battery and productivity performance tests using UL Solution’s Procyon (the only real-world office productivity benchmarking tool for non-x86 chips), the Surface Laptop 7 performed well against the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x and Dell XPS 13 (2024) I’ve tested. While 16GB is enough for most productivity tasks, I’d recommend the 32GB option if you plan to use the laptop for some content creation work. There’s no option to upgrade just the RAM. Battery life, which reached an unprecedented 22 hours and 30 minutes in our Microsoft Office test and more than 15 hours in our video loop benchmark. Microsoft’s claim of 22 hours of battery life is definitely not a joke. It’s very impressive and a record for our lab. Of course, it’s worth noting that it uses an LCD panel, not the more power-hungry OLED.
The all-metal chassis has a really nice premium feel to it, and the battery life is excellent. This is a great showcase for the Windows-on-ARM platform after years of failure, and I can imagine that subsequent generations of Snapdragon X chips will be a more serious threat to Intel and AMD’s mobile platforms. What we’re seeing with the Surface Laptop 7 is a game changer.
