The Google Pixel 7 Pro brings a number of new features and major upgrades over the previous Pixel 6 Pro. It improves on the design language of the Pixel 6 Pro, while giving us the power of the second-generation Tensor chip and some impressive software features.
In our Pixel 7 Pro review, we mentioned that the camera itself is a great phone. It brings a powerful camera array, a 50MP main camera, a 48MP telephoto lens with a new “pro-grade zoom” that can zoom in on distant objects, and a third ultra-wide-angle lens. However, the Pro model retains some of the more subtle upgrades, such as an extra telephoto camera, longer battery life, RAM, and a large display. Here are 6 reasons to buy it!
Camera function
Every year Google promises to bring one of the best camera phones with its Pixel, and this time, the tech giant managed to surprise us with three cameras and features on the Pixel 7 Pro. The 50MP lens really shows off the camera prowess of this phone.
The 48MP telephoto lens has an all-new 5x optical zoom, allowing you to focus on very distant subjects with great clarity. The 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens is similar to what was seen on the Pixel 6 Pro last year, but it now has autofocus in the lens, a 125.8-degree field of view, and a new macro focus mode that turns the camera into a macro lens.
Tensor G2 helps bring us faster night vision, improved Super Res Zoom, and facial deblurring. I found that when taking low-light photos, I didn’t have to hold the phone steady for long as long as the photo software brightened the photo.
As for video, the Pixel 7 Pro can record 4K video at up to 60 fps, adds Cinematic Blur for artistic blur in video, adds active stabilization for videos shot on the go, and adds support for Apple’s Action Mode Provided the money to run it.
Impressive telephoto lens
The 48MP telephoto camera brings the new Super Res Zoom, which harnesses the power of optics and leverages the Tensor G2 chip to deliver crisp photos of distant subjects. It has 5x optical zoom, but when combined with optical and digital zoom, the Pixel 7 Pro can reach 30x zoom.
While over 2X, you’ll get a 12.5MP image instead of 48MP, but that won’t affect the image quality much.
Tensor G2 Features
Once again, Google brings a wealth of software-driven features, powered by the Tensor G2 chip that powers the phone. The new Photo Deblur feature lets you remove blur from any photo and is also very helpful in correcting the blur on many of my old photos.
Direct My Call, which first appeared on the Pixel 6, has also received some upgrades. Calling options appear in text much faster, and with just a few taps, it lets you quickly find the right person. Tensor G2 also brings the best speech-to-text capabilities. Audio input in messages now supports emoji, and Tensor can now transcribe audio messages as well.
Bright and stunning OLED display
You get a large 6.7-inch OLED screen with Quad HD Plus resolution. The gorgeous display is great for watching videos, and it’s very bright. It has a peak brightness of 1500 nits.
It’s not the brightest display on the market, but it’s very close to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has a 6.8-inch AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 1,750 nits. The iPhone 14 Pro is slightly ahead at 2,000 nits. The Pixel 7 Pro’s 120Hz refresh rate really makes it a professional-grade display, too.
Advanced Design
Google hasn’t changed the design of the Pixel 7 Pro, but it’s still a very premium phone. There’s a horizontal strip of polished aluminum on the back, where the camera is neatly embedded. The new Hazel colors are subtle and flattering, and the phone’s corners are soft and muted. Aluminum strips are also prone to scratches without a cover. Overall, it’s a good-looking phone that’s definitely at the top of the list of the best Android phones.
Affordable price tag
Despite all the upgrades this year, Google hasn’t raised the price of the Pixel 7 Pro. The $899 starting price is good for a professional-grade phone, and compared to competitors like Samsung and Apple, the Pixel 7 Pro is the best value for money.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra costs $1,199 for 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max costs $1,099 for equivalent storage. The Pixel 7 Pro brings a powerful camera, including a telephoto lens, smart features, and decent performance to justify its price tag.
