The photographic prowess of the top-tier Samsung Galaxy S23 model has come into further focus with two leaks from Ice Universe, telling us the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s main camera resolution and performance.
As we’ve heard rumors many times, Samsung will allegedly add a 200MP main camera to the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, according to Ice Universe, photos will have a default resolution of 12MP, not 12.5MP like other 200MP phones. Larger sensors often use “pixel binning” to take high-resolution photos and render them into more manageable sizes by allowing the sensor to combine its pixels together and capture more light to improve brightness and color.
Ice Universe claims that 50MP and 200MP modes will also be available in the camera. Together, these three options give users a lot of flexibility, depending on whether they want the excellent detail of 200MP, or the improved brightness and color of pixel-binned 50MP or 12MP footage.
The whistleblower also claims that the main camera of the Galaxy S23 Ultra will use an f/1.7 large aperture. For comparison, the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 108MP main camera has an f/2.2 aperture (a higher number means a smaller aperture), the iPhone 14 Pro’s 48MP main camera has an f/1.8 aperture, and the Google Pixel 7 Pro’s 50MP main snapper The camera is f/1.85.
A wider aperture means more light hitting the camera sensor, and hopefully brighter, more colorful images as a result. We hope this is reflected in the final photos taken with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and hope it tops our best camera phone guide.
There might be one thing holding it back, though. Another revelation from IU According to pictures posted on IU’s Weibo page, the HDR photography of the Galaxy S23 Ultra is an improvement over the Galaxy S22 Ultra, but not as good as what the Pixel 7 Pro can achieve.
The camera captures photos in HDR by taking different exposure levels of the scene and merging the information together, resulting in a single image with more prominent highlights and richer shadows. It would be a shame if Samsung lost out to Google in HDR performance, as the Pixel series is a serious competitor to the Galaxy S series. But we’d love to improve on the previous Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Other leaks about the Galaxy S23 Ultra claim that the shape of the body will change slightly, and a new chipset will join a new main camera, but there is not much other information. According to rumors, the standard Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus will get more, such as a redesign to look more like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, a larger battery and new front-facing camera, and the same upgraded chipset.
While we’re not sure when the Galaxy S23 series will be available, the reveal is likely to be between January and March next year.
